What alloy of bronze should I get?

Post by tidalwave »

I just found out that I can get bronze washers in two alloys:
silicon bronze and phosphor bronze.
Is there a preference?

Also should I just replace my 'teflon' washer and keep the SS washers on either side...or should it be two bronze washers in contact?

ahhhhhhhhh cant believe you guys chip chip chip It works honest even my frail wench can pull the thing out of the cam cleat from the cockpit.

I just dont want to mislead people into thinking that a line led aft from the mast would infringe on the rotation it can be done very easy cheaply in a couple min. works great and can be pulled outside the dodger as the swivel pully/camcleat rotates farther then the mast to line up to where ever you pull from even outside a dodger Besides anytime you pull a sail down or up you should be headed into the wind no matter how strong it is or you will have a mess on your hands this is really true with the rotating mast the sail will catch every thing on the way down or up if you dont head into the wind. I will post you a nice big photo sunday. Besides dont you have an X?
Oh and cats and tri's use this system to raise and lower from their rotating mast I didnt think of it I found this out.
beside 5200 will fill all those extra holes you drilled honest
Just kidding be nice

Cam cleats are okay if you're close to them, but they present the cleating and releasing angle problems, as Chip refers to them, and when used from a distance, that can be very large indeed, depending on the cam height and sheave to cam distance. Here's a rough example with 2:1:

In this rough example, six feet back requires roughly three feet of line movement to release.

I understand the tangent line moves, affecting the ratio, but this is a ROUGH example

would this block, Harken 011 be useful for the turn at the mast base? It is on sale at west from $64 to $16?

How about the lewmar clutch on sale from $77 to $18 (single) $138 to $32 (double) for the clutch(s)

Oh I see what you guys are talking about, Your right I do have to snap that little bugger to release it. I once had to snap it twice because there wasnt enough snap in my snap.

Paul,

The prices you quote as "from" are actually the sale prices - your "to" price is the savings from the original listing. So the price on the block is $64; the single clutch is $77 - and so on.

Too bad - great prices otherwise. :?

That dealer when asked how to do it said and I quote " you dont need to do that" I had spent two days on the net trying to find some way. When I went to a cat site I saw what I wanted. That dealer saw mine and said ok that will work and said he had something like that on another boat. AHHHHHHHHH COULD HAVE SAVED ME SOME HASSLE. No he didnt give me the idea. The same thing with sail slugs that dealer said " You dont need that" so to the net I went and sail rite had the answer for me.
I wish that dealer would be more helpfull in some of the areas I have questions but sadly not.
Not trying to take credit for inventing things but when you dont know how to do something and you ask the expert you should get a little help.
My purpose here is to share these things with other M folks as in 2004 when I bought my boat the information on this stuff was weak at best, and I had to spend hours thinking and researcing and trying stuff to do what I wanted to do. I freely will give the time I spent doing this to anyone interested to save them the hassle. as for that dealer he does have a down side in my opinion.

Come on, I would buy a boat from him again, Hes not a bad dealer. No one is perfect and I was not trying to bad mouth the dealer only didnt want my many hours spent working on my boat tossed aside or chalked up to The dealer gave me these great mods. He didnt and to be fair I dont spend alot of time bugging him either. Be nice Im not pushing nor leading anyone from this dealer. Now you went and hurt my feelings.....
