Ok.... Last week I discovered the biggest problem with a trailer sailer on your driveway (for me at least!) .... If your towing car ain't running you can't go sailing!!!
I've been looking at buying new car just to solve that problem but a quick slap on the wrist from the Admiral has brought me to my senses ..... New diesel pump (for my car) should arrive next week. ... Fingers crossed

Just had time to read this interesting thread.

I think having a boat on the hard ready for launching or in a berth (US 'slip') or on a mooring has its benefits if you are predominantly interested in one sailing area.

I know somone who has a boat around the same displacement as a Mac in a marina. It suits him as he is getting on in years, however since he has had the boat in the marina berth he has not been anywhere else as of course he now needs to get his boat out of the water onto the trailer and down with the mast etc before he travels to the launch site and up with the mast etc. It's all too much for him so he doesn't do it and no longer participates in our group cruises. Of course if the weather is rubbish at his mooring location he doesn't take the option of sailing somewhere else.

I think if you have a boat on hard stand or a mooring you have to be strong willed and keep your trailer in roadworthy condition so that you are ready to take advantage of the major feature of a trailer sailer - travelling to better or new places to sail.

I think I fall into the keep it in the driveway camp - besides I like visiting it! but I can see how some locations ie one cruising ground with few options within drivable distance might lead to you getting a 'slip' or keeping it near a ramp. Likewise if you don't have the room at home or a suitable tow vehicle.

Does this mean I gree with BOAT? Oh Dear.....

No joke when something stopping me getting out on the water I sometimes grab a drink, go up on deck and just relax for a while (or longer!) .... cures my jitters for an hour or two at least

Ohh dear, we often go down to the hard to "work" on the boat and we end up sitting in the cockpit chatting to others in the yard, that big cockpit is a trap, too easy for 4 or 5 people to sit down and get comfy

When you go to sell your boat will you get your money back? If you keep it in the water you need to add all the money you spent for the slip. Many years of slip fees you never get back.

The driveway is free - for me - the trailer mooring was a resale thing - I will get back all my money when I sell.

When it comes to boating, ROI is not about what you get back when selling, but rather what you get in the process of owning.

For what it costs me to have my boat on the hard just the convenience of not having to take the big car, never mind all the rigging and unrigging, wear and tear on the bigger car, fuel saving of taking the small car to the boat and cheaper insurance its got to be at least comparable if not cheaper to keep her at the club

I am not aware of anyone who purchased a Mac for its investment worthiness. They may be out there, but I bet they are a rarefied group.

One can add up all of the boat expenses over the years, but the sailing memories one gets out of the boat is priceless. In my opinion, a worthwhile investment.
