I agree with the knot but I believe the tool we were referring to is not a knot but an alloy figure eight which can be used to belay climber, rappel (ab-sail for the southerners), lower gear/people and slips onto a line and can slide up and down with ease unless properly arrested under load. Great versatile tool with many complicated copycats ATC's, reverso's and other belay devices that apparently work better.mastreb wrote:Figure 8's are the easiest worthwhile knot to tie correctly, and are among the strongest of all knots.

Re: Anchor away
I have never used a bridle while anchoring, so I'm confused with something here. Do you tie a knot to the rode, or do you attach a shackle to the rode?mastreb wrote:Figure 8's are the easiest worthwhile knot to tie correctly, and are among the strongest of all knots. Climbers use them because they're easy to tie, fast, and easy to check to make sure they're tied correctly. They also don't come loose on low-friction lines like HDPE/Dyneema/amsteel because they jam. You shouldn't use a bowline on low-friction line because it will come loose. They have a rated breaking strength of 100% of the line breaking strength. With a shackle, they're ideal for anchors.
The problems with them is that they jam and can be impossible to untie without a marlinspike, and that they're very difficult to tie correctly around something, unlike the bowline which is purpose made for that.

Re: Anchor away
I think most people knot a loop into the bridle line to tie the anchor rode off on. Never tried it myself either since I usually anchor bow and stern. I suppose if you wanted a really fancy bridle, you would have a way to adjust the rode attachment point on the bridle.
I'm still not sure what to do about bow roller. I'm thinking that I will have to relocate one of the cleats to get a roller with a 22 lb anchor stored in it far enough away from the furler. And I'm thinking maybe a roller with a bail is more seaworthy but the one I have seen on a 26M is a smaller version which may fit better but it has no bail. Sure would be nice to see some more people's roller mods on the 26X
