I would compare instant coffee to non-alcoholic beer. You could drink it, but why?

We use the Bodum coffee press's found pretty much everywhere, especially easy to find at Tarbuck's (not my preferred brew) But they make one with a locking top and sealed pour spout. so when it goes over you don't lose precious precious coffee, and a rinse in the ocean deals with the grounds. No moldy filters, no spills and great coffee, its a win win.

Not where I live -

Without a NEC permit the EPA will jail me and make me pay for a super fund site if I dump my coffee grounds in the ocean. Over here you not only need an invasive species sticker for your ballast tank but you also need one for your coffee maker and your anus too - and if you don't have one they will do an inspection - (with the same probe they use for the ballast tank!).

Anyways, Charbucks is not known for coffee over here, people here don't go to Charbucks for coffee - people here go to Charbucks to get milk shakes with coffee flavor - Couple years back we could not figure out why all the non resident out of state college kids in California were getting fat and it was a mystery until they noticed the newcomers were all getting their morning coffee from Charbucks - - mystery solved: 2000 calories per coffee - (who needs a dinner?) I think in Arkansas they called it the "Mountain Dew" effect.

But don't despair; Bob, I do have a coffee press - (no self respecting Californian would NOT have one) - but again, it's only for my camper or for home use where I have my NRC approved 'Spent Grounds Storage Container' that is picked up by the EPA every week for a nominal fee, (I got good financing). Of course, when I use the coffee press in the camper I am usually out of state somewhere near where the rest of you live and I can dump my grounds anywhere - so it's not a problem in the camper.

I also have my EPA approved placard that I am required to display whenever I drink coffee in the boat at Catalina island:



If I don't display it they put ink dye in my Bodum coffee press.

OK, I'll bite . I don't put anything in my coffee, which, according to the label is 100% coffee, unlike a lot of people who make a big deal about making coffee and then they put some sort of creamer in it and/or a sweetener. I'd say once you do that you aren't drinking coffee but a concoction of various ingredients (Boat mentioned one aspect of 'real coffee' above). I'll bet that a number of people that drink 'real coffee' don't care for a cup of someone else's since it doesn't have the same percentage of cream and/or sweetener that they use.

I'm usually function first, my coffee is made and drank in about the time someone else has pre-heated their mug, much less gone through whatever steps it takes to make the coffee and then they still have the cleanup time after all of that. I'm usually anxious to get on with my day, so it is instant for me, thank you .

I do drink a beer every day and it does have alcohol in it, but not much if I bought it in Utah and I'm glad no one has brought up wine. Another subject that I just don't get ,

Hahahaha! lmfao! Too funny Boat! Couldn't agree with you more on the people who after paying their outrageous gym fees and extra for a fitness class head directly from said class to spend $8 to undo everything they've been trying to accomplish. I usually have one coffee 'irished' up and the rest black so charbucks tarbucks isn't my thing.

Folgers. Gourmet. Or Columbian. Black. They both taste about the same anyway. And since I drink about 8 cups a day, I'd go broke buying the burned pencil shavings they call coffee at Starshmucks.

For me a fresh cup of black coffee adds to the ambience of the morning.
If a crew brings along Baileys or Irish Creme then okay for me too. I think the smell of brewing coffee refreshingly overwhelms our small cabins.

Hey John – I have a couple of those little 12 volt 1 cup brewers laying around in the garage somewhere – they are sort of impractical because they only make one cup and they take about 20 minutes to do it one at a time so it's too long for two people to wait for coffee. I have an AC inverter in my RV and the coach has 2 batteries and making 1 pot of coffee using the inverter will drain one of the batteries to 10 volts in 7 minutes.

There is no such thing as a 12 volt coffee make that can actually make more than 8 cups of HOT coffee with only ONE 12 volt battery in less than an hour unless you try it at 6000 feet altitude where water boils fast.
Just do the math – the amperage required to boil 80 ounces of water at sea level is more amp hours than one 12 volt battery can provide.

Don’t be fooled by those so called “Truckers Coffee Makers” that claim to make 10 cups on 12 volts – they can do it – but it takes over an hour and you need to have the engine running when you do it. I have spent at least 200 nights in truck stops and everyone has tried those things once.

Not really an option on the boat.
For the boat it’s gotta be something you can do on the stove - lot's more BTU's there in that little can of alcohol than THREE 12 volt batteries – if we could do it with 12 volts than we really will have coffee on top of the mast in the crows nest – that would be nice.

Bottom line, 12v does not work to heat anything. A lot more BTUs in fossil fuels or alcohol.

I love those old coffee pots! It beats boiling your coffee grounds in water and adding an egg to capture all the grounds so you can drink it.
