You might have a defective one. Gravity and a bubble in water are as foolproof as it can get.
Mine doesn't work between October and May in Canada either. (Frozen)

This is what we have been using for three years. It has been very reliable, as best we could estimate. The bad part is that it only goes up to 45 degrees

Sometimes we like to push the envelope so we can put a scare into those who feel sailing is dull

What Trout said in his first sentence. Try mounting it in the center on the sliding hatch TO the cabin?? Shouldn't matter, but - - -
I certainly see no need to get an electronic expensive one when the cheapies are fine.
Rick
PS Pay no attention to Ray (Nice Aft). 45 degree heel would scare the sh** out of him too

I just had mine at 38 degrees and we were AT the gunnell. Don't see how we could have gone over any more than we did, without going overboard

Rick,
Do I have to get the Admiral to testify? We have had Nice Aft to the point where the bubble stopped! Couldn't go any farther

, but the boat did. It's fun! Trust me brother. We have been there

I'm sure others have also.
You know you're close when everything below not tied down goes thud. You can do it. Remember, a Mac is self righting. At least they are supposed to be
If anyone else has had their boat at 45 degrees, please let Rick know. I think he is up for the challenge.
Ray
Rick, look at the picture and see the starboard port hole. I have had a friend below deck when the water was over the port. He felt like he was at an aquarium.
By the way. Here is where mine is located.

Once you hit 45, does it really matter. I mean at this point I would be too busy staying in the boat to care what the heal was happening.
It would be like trying to figure how fast you were going when you fell out of a plane. Answer. Fast enough.
How far were you healed. Far enough.
No PFD

Right Trout. I had BOTH feet against the side of the cockpit trying to stay in the boat and no PFD on (I MUST start wearing that dam* thing)

Would't you be dumping too much air out of the sails to be efficent at 45 deg. heal. How big were the wind swells when you were healed that far? What was the wind speed ?

And you had time to even LOOK at the inclinometer

Not to mention look closely enough to read "38", rather than "oh s**t it's almost 40"

Cool man
and no PFD on
Doing that you need a strong tether, falling off the boat in those conditions is no fun, PFD or no

Mine comes with an audio alarm
0-10 degrees (quiet)
10-15 "Honey..."
15-20 " I dont like this..."
>20 If you ever want s* again, head up....
(bad choice of words, that last one)

Nice one! When I get to 25 degs I get the main sheet snatched out of my hands and hit over the head with the boat hook, never mind no S*

I have the same inclinometer installed on the front edge of the sliding hatch.
The fun doesn't start until you are single-handed between 25-30 degrees. But I can't get past 35 or the boat just automatically starts rounding up.
I think 25 is the fastest/sweetest spot.

Just get two more and mont them at 45ยบ angles to the horizontal one . That way you can know how far over you got
