Check list for close of sale

Today or tomorrow a marine survey will be completed on a Mac X with which I'm impressed, as well as an engine inspection by a marine mechanic.

In case I buy the boat, I need to assemble a check list to make sure all the paperwork is in order to close the sale. Please let me know if anything is missing below.

1. Payment: I plan to pay with a bank draft.

2. Insurance: Surveyor to fax a copy of the survey to insurance broker, put insurance in place at the same time I pay for the boat.

3. Provincial sales tax (PST): I live in the Province of Ontario so there will be provincial tax. Do I remit that to the government, or does the vendor? Are there other taxes? Are the trailer or motor exempt?

4. Bill of sale: Vendor to itemize boat, trailer and engine separately, and list everything included in the sale, including such things as sails, electronics, ropes, cushions, fridge, various doo-dads he added, plus custom fitted cockpit cover that is still being fabricated.

5. Registration: How does the new ownership get registered with the government? Is there a special office one has to visit or what?

6. Name of boat: If I want to change the name of the boat (later) does that have to be registered with the government? Or do you just replace the lettering on the hull? Not a big item, but would like to know.

7. Other: Anything else missing here?

You need three separate invoices

Boat
Trailer
Engine and accessories

The registration of the boat and trailer are two completely separate events so you need separate paperwork

In the US, you really should make sure there are no liens against the boat and make sure that you dont inherit someone elses payment book. People can even put liens against a boat because the previous owner didnt pay the house painter. You become responsible for those bills once you buy the boat.

I dont know how this works in your fair land - talk to a solictior please.

When we bought our boat, I took the bill of sale to our Revenue Canada office prepared to pay the tax. They did all the paperwork to transfer title of the boat and advised that I would get a bill for the tax in several months.

They're only concerned with the registration number, not the name, so you can change it later...make sure you look up an appropriate name changing ceremony so you can appease the gods of wind and water ;)

The license bureau will transfer the trailer ownership.

This might seem like a joke to some but why risk it, even in this age of enlightenment, there are still unknown forces that meddle in the affairs of ships and sailors.

I printed out a name changing ceremony off the web and made sure it was aboard for our first outing....but forgot to bring champagne, so we used the only thing we had .... a plastic water bottle.

I guess the gods were OK with that as we haven't had any major problems.

I had to go to my local Service Canada Office with all the paperwork to get my registration number.

I was just told this in a PM. I will do that, and will keep the Bill of Sales separate for each of the boat, trailer and engine. I will insure all three.

My understanding is that I visit the ministry of transportation and transfer (or buy new) the license plate for that, just like a car, and that I have 10 days to do so (if I take the vendor's plate).

I won't tell the ministry anything about a boat -- just that I bought a used trailer to haul stuff around.
