Fuel Gauge

Post by Wind Chime »

Has anyone installed a "Fuel Gauge" into the pedestal console? (I can't seam to find any in the mods section)

We just came back from a 9 day cruise in our 2000 :macx: , and physically checking the fuel is a pain in the aft. We have 2 fuel tanks and fuel storage compartment covers, so it makes checking fuel difficult. While underway, I have to remove the fuel compartment cover and physically lift up the tank to see how heavy it is, and then guess how much fuel is left based on the weight of the tank.

I was hoping to install a fuel gauge in the pedestal console with an A-B switch to change between tanks. If possible, I want to avoid running any wires into the lower cabin for fear of fumes.

Any thoughts ?

Yes, I have one, but I don't think my setup will do you much good, since I have internal tanks and not the standard tanks.

Here's mine.. the gauges are (top to bottom) Tachometer, Trim, and Fuel:

My "Tempo" brand, 12 gallon fuel tanks, have a built-in fuel gauge. I have to lift the seat/cover to read the gauge, but at least I don't have to guess how much fuel is left. Several models of GPS units also include fuel monitors.

Wind Chime, I installed a LMF-200 guage from Lowrance- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templ ... stid=89849

I see you have a Suzuki engine.... I have the Suzuki Df70, after installing this guage I found out there is also a interface cable you can plug into the motor which connects to this unit quite easily, it gives a digital readout of Gallons per hour and fuel economy measured at the fuel injectors also displays volts, rpms, temp, engine diagnostics and hourmeter and more The guage will run you about $100 and interface for motor will cost about $60. http://store.brownspoint.com/detail.asp ... 90C0-88011

http://primus.lowrance.com/support/resu ... 0#Goto1413

If you decide NOT to use the interface cable you can use this:
http://www.marine.com/product_info.php/ ... s_id/29569
It has a fuel monitoring system which connect to the fuel line which should do what you need it to do. I do not recomend using both you may get different reading and it may be difficult to sync them both up

IF YOU USE ANY OF THESE COMBINATIONS MAKE SURE THE ENDS OF THE CABLE ARE ALL RED OR ALL BLUE...OTHERWISE YOU WILL NEED TO GET ADAPTERS THE RED CONNECTORS ARE THE NEWER STYLE

Cheap approach.....Still have to remove the tank from the locker tho.....Vertically insert calibrated dowel in fuel filler opening of tank, remove, and read. Calibration = add one gallon of fuel to empty tank, insert dowel, mark (e.g. notch) dowel at top of wet area, repeat for added second, third, fourth, etc. gallons....Ron

Wind Chime,

I have a single 12-gal tank with a fuel sender installed. There is a guage mounted on my pedastal. Wires go below the cockpit (through a hole drilled in the side of the starboard fuel locker) over and up into the pedastal and to my fuel guage. Works fine. Fuel line also goes through the hole and under the cockpit. Comes out at the engine at the same place the throttle cables come out.

Guage, and all my pedastal stuff (GPS power, ignition key, engine tilt, RPM, depth guage) are wired directly to the battery...not through the electrical panel.

PO did it all or had it done. Don't know the brand. Boat is on another continent. I will look to see if I have any pics when I get home tonight.

Not sure if this helps you any. Doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to do. But once the fuel tank is wired for fuel guage it is not easy to take the tank out.

Jim
