Need Prop Help for 02' Honda 50 on 02' 26X

Post by airbornemp19 »

I read a few posts about props and didn't see one that answered my questions. If you have a Mac26x with a Honda 50HP please tell me how fast you are going. We got this boat a month ago, took it out and were surprised at how fast we were going. 30 Seconds later I hit a shallow spot and destroyed the prop. The prop that came off was 11 3/4 X 10 pitch. That day I saw an ad in Charlotte Craigslist for a prop claiming to be the same size from michigan wheel, never used guy just had it in the garage. The numbers are not on the prop but he assured me the serial number indicated it was the right size.

So I've taken it out several times sinces, and it seems slower. We were only doing 18mph at 6000RPM with the HONDA 50HP OB running at what Seemed** to be much louder than before. Our boat was empty, no ballast and with sales on poles but not raised running 18mph at best when before it seemed faster and more quiet.

If you have a 26x with a honda 50 outboard please post your prop size and pitch and top speed w/conditions and also any recommendations you may have please. THanks for the help in advance guys. I know this subject comes up alot. Here is two short clips of me sailing 2 weeks ago in florida on my mac.

Do you know that the Michigan prop requires a hub insert to fit the Honda? I have one and will try to find the paper work. Mine is a 11 1/4X10. I
don't get 18mph, more like 14-15, but I'm heavy.

(past posting below)

I searched around the board for the best props and decided on the 9 pitch, so I purchased the Solas and Vortex.

I just recieved my two 4 blade 9 pitch props for my Honda 50 hp 4-Stroke. I used to use a 13 and 11 pitch (9 - 11 kts @ 5800 rpm) . So here are my results.... keep in mind I have a 138 lb centerboard mod, 2 gel batteries, an engel refigerator and two 9 gal gas tanks. I left the ballast tank empty:

Vortex 4 blade: 12 x 9
5000-5500 rpm - 13-14 kts

Solas Amita 4 11.8 x 9
5900-6000 rpm - 15-16 kts
part # 3313-118-09

Ok so the Solas rocks and I will keep the vortex for a spare. I didn't have any cavitation, probably because of the extra weight on my boat.

Added: I got the props from iboats.com

Bossa Nova is a '99 X with a '99 Honda 50 engine. She came to me with a 3-blade prop, 11 3/4" diameter x 10" pitch. Engine got up to 6000 RPM and maybe 14 kts by GPS. (But I carry a lot of "stuff" and Bossa Nova is heavy.)
When I broke the tip off one blade (stupid docking trick :P :x ), my local Honda dealer's closest match was a 4-blade prop, 11 3/8" diameter x 10" pitch. With this, running wide-open I'm getting about 15 kts at 5400 RPM, ballast empty.

5400 rpm @ WOT seems like a pretty workable match for me. A lighter boat would certainly do better.

The Honda part number for this prop is 58134-ZV5-010AH.

Hope this helps - Rick

Maybe I was overestimating how fast I was going at first because it seems as though 15 knots is as fast as anyone goes on the 26x with the honda 50 OB. Surely someone is going 24mph like Macgregor said it would. What? The boat has to be empty and derigged to do that? Damn, I'll never derig all that stuff just to go 6 mph faster.

Who is the fastest under power on the MAC 26x with the HOnda 50 OB

My michigan prop came with the hub insert permanently mounted inside the prop. you can't remove it.

I have a 02 :macx: running the 02 Honda BF50. I use the Piranha propeller system. With a 12 X 11C 3 blade I get just under 16 Knots (18 MPH) at 5700 RPM.
with a 10 3/8 X 13 I get 14 Knots at 5500 RPM. However the engine runs quieter with the smaller diameter and it seems to run flatter (Bow not so high).
Fuel economy also seems better with the smaller diameter.

We have the same prop as Erik. Since the Mac is a "barge" with a Honda 50 we needed more torque than HP for wakeboarding and general moving an oversized boat for that small amount of HP.

So we purchased the prop at Water World in Durham, NC (919-596-8185) for about $110. The part number is 58134-ZV5-009ah, see:

http://www.honda.ca/marine/images/Eng/2 ... nglish.pdf

Our top RPM is about 5,800 at 17.5 MPH with a derigged empty boat. No worse than the three bladed that was original. Much better off the line and under load. The carbs need to be synced and the engine tunned, RPM is down to 5,500.
