Is there a way to modify the regulator to improve low temp gas flow? Or is there a different brand that would be better for all around grilling/cooking/stir frying? Rob

Are you going to use it at home on a concrete padio !!

Ours is a Magma 14 inch or so that hangs off the stearn rail seat when were out sailing, It works great even in a good breeze and has for over 200 days out sailing and with an added $6.00 pizza stone you can cook almost anything and makes great crisp crust pizza. I suggest a 1.5 gal refillable propane bottle that replaces about 8 throwaway canasters and saves lots of money.

We have a Magma also. More money than the camping world one, but well worth it since you won't have to replace it. It is good quality stainless with heavy enough metal not to get damaged easily (bumped a tree with ours once...long story!) It is made to mount and work easily on the boat and will stay lit in all kinds of wind and weather. We mainly grill with it but it can be used as an oven--or use it as a big stove-top type burner for large pan or pot. It was a good value and if I ever lost it, I'd go out and buy another.

We also have a Magma WOK which is made to fit the Magma Grill. Also stainless steel and of good quality. Google Magma Wok and you will get all kinds of choices. The only problem we have with the Wok is that it is pretty big and that makes it hard to store near the surface. If I had it to do over, I'd get a smaller one--but stay with the Magma stainless family.

This is what I use. The Kuuma Stow N' Go. It has 160 square inches of cooking area, and a heat output up to 13,000 BTU's.


When I don't use it on the boat, I use it as a portable to take with us anywhere we go. It has fold away legs, so it can be used as a portable grill. You just place it on a table.

Agreed. That thing looks nice at home or on land...but not on a boat.


Our Magma was probably one of the best purchases we've made. We've cooked everything from burgers to pizza on this thing. And pizza tastes so good on the water.

I also have a Magma, just like the one in the previous posting. However, if you do want a unit that can be used on both land and boat, get the Magma... and the optional stand!

We have a stern mounted Magma grill also, but last year we bought the Safari Chef and like it. When we're at the marina I put it on the floor of the cockpit with the hatch open and stand in the galley and cook breakfast. I haven't tried it while anchored, but the unit is pretty sturdy plus with the different cooking surfaces we've been pretty happy. We still use the BBQ for steaks and burgers though.

Normally I mount mine on the stern stanchion post or the arch depending on whether I have my bimini up. I use the shady side. Another consideration is the breeze, any drippings should blow away from the hull. I clean and store it below in it's original nylon bag. I have had my Magma for 25 years and it works perfectly!

I don't know about the others, but the Kuuma has an optional attachment for attaching to a stanchion.

As to grease dropping into the water, my Kuuma has a removable grease tray. Nothing goes overboard, or is blown back towards the boat in a sudden breeze. When we use it on a table, nothing drips on there either.

The Magma has several mounting options. The mount I have will attach to any stanchion.
I bought mine from Spinnaker Jims because he is cheaper and also had a cover that matched my sail cover. I keep it there all the time and it's out of the way, "stored" and ready to use.

I prefer it hanging off the stern so smoke doesn't blow at me and any possible grease (it has a catcher) or other debris falls over.

When not in use underway, I disconnect the regulator / fuel canister. My last time out, when removing the fabric cover, I watched the venturi tube elbow fall off & sink. The replacement is going to have a leash!

Anyone have experience leaving the Magma attached to an aft rail while towing? It's all about minimizing set up/take down time. If not permanently attached, where do you stow it?

I don't leave the Magma mounted while trailering, so as not to chance potential road vibration to loosen something and lose it on the highway. Set up time is only a minute, but I don't set it up til at anchor or the first meal that requires it. A plastic tote box in the aft berth is where the Magma stows when not rail mounted. Fuel cannisters & regulator store alongside fuel tanks in cockpit.
