We have the 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke on our 97

. It is the same engine as the 50 with a change in the electronics and misc. I would go for the 60 instead of the 50 since there is no weight difference. It is a fantastic engine. Starts every time and is quiet and dependable. The 4 stroke is very heavy and you need to think about how much weight you can transfer forward. The prop depends on how much weight you are carrying. We started with a three blade 14 x 13 but it bogged the engine a bit so went to a 14 x 9 which would over-rev. Then tried a 14 x 11 and it was just right! I have had Mod-Fever for several years and have set the boat up for long term cruising so we carry a lot of weight. I think it is probably time to change back down to the 14 x 9 when we are loaded for a long trip.
I love the Mercury engine. I sometimes wish I had a 90 but I can say I've ever really needed more power or speed.

I ended up with a 90 Hp Yamaha 2 stroke just because it was a great deal. Still playing with props but a 14 x 11 seems the most appropriate.
I sometimes wish i had the 4 stroke for noise but I rarely putter around. I tend to sail as long as I can then get er up and go to get where I need to be. From a guys perspective its still nice to have some throttle left when a stinkpot starts to overtake.

Good luck. We searched for two years and finally bought a new 2010 Suzuki DF90A. 4 stroke motors are hard to find that are in good shape.
