I think I am selling my at the end of this season and getting a new . Assuning I can get the dealer to install a 90 HP motor, I will be going with the extra horsepower. I am in DC and the higher speed will allow us to head further south on the Potomac. Has anyone else gone with a 90? If so which model? I was assuming speeds in the 26-27 MPH range.

I am not entirely sure I would sell the X and get an M just for the sake of a 90 HP engine, but rather I'd just get a 90 HP for the X and keep that, less expense. The X hull is more inclined to the powerboat side of the hybrid equation so is more conducive to having the 90HP.

I put a 2 stroke Yamaha 90 Hp on my 97X and have no problems.
I went with the 2 stroke for the weight issue. Its louder and not as good fuel economy as a 4 stroke but that was the compromise I was willing to make (plus a great price)

The Admiral sewed a section of an old comforter between sunbrella and I used snaps to install it behind the back seat. When sitting at the helm the engine is still loud but anywhere forward of the steering wheel the sound is a small fraction. Makes sense since the fiberglass hole under the seat worked like a megaphone to direct the sound forward.

I recently bought an 01 26x which has a 90 Nissan same vintage (oil injected 2 stroke). I've only been out twice for shake down stuff. I'm at 5000 feet alt. First time out at 9000 feet (Dillon Lake, Colorado) I could only get 3000 rpm at 15 mph. I replaced the 13 3/4 - 15 with a 14 - 10 and retested at my home altitude, 5k. I easily got 5900 rpm at 23 mph. It does suck gas. In search of optimum fuel economy I just got a Floscan from Bluelake Tackle and have yet to install it. My next projects are bowsprit/rollers and 12 gallon fuel tanks for cruising next winter in the Keys and possibly the Bahamas. Good luck to us all!! Best wishes.

General rule is...every 25 lbs you add to boat you need one hp. more to get on plane.
Find out how much weight you will carry with all the add ons and use the 25/1 ratio.
On a MacX the on plane starts at 15 Knots but better at 17 knots for fuel efficient.
Anything over that you are burning to much fuel , unless you are trying to outrun a Thunderstorm.I would imagine a MacM would require a 1-2 knot greater speed due to Keel depth and V shape.

I have a Tohatsu TLDi 90 on my 2006 . I am very happy with the motor and do not regret the extra horsepower. It's very reliable and economical. Definitely the right choice back in 2005 when I purchased the boat. If I had to do it over again I would still go with the 90, but I would look at some of the recent four strokes that are now available.

Get a bigger mast and a new suite of sails.... go faster and still not use fuel?

As for adding 12 gallon tanks for cruising.... a 90 on the plane will still eat through them pretty damn quick won't it?

Thanks for the info...my X is a 2001 that is starting to show it's age so that is why I was looking to go with a whole new boat rather than just an engine. I'll take a look at some of the fuel consumption stats for the 90s to see what they will do to 24 gallons of gas.

FMC, I don't have a Breath at those heights, I am bearly breathing the low Allitudes of the Gulf and thats at 20 ft. above Mean High Waters.
Problems with us, is we have to suck in all that salt air and high humidity.

Hay Dave---rust is good for the lungs. I have to head 1,300 miles south east for a salt water fix at least once a year---doctors orders to regain all my lost 02 energy--3% per 1,000' above sea level

BTW, the winds at 8-9,000 are anything but Fair

would you consider a 115 tldi? Or do you think it is not necessary.
I am considering switching from a 4 stroke Suzuki 70 (1.300cc) to a 2 stroke TOHATSU Tldi 90. I have a 2004 Mac and I need just a little more power to feel happy.
However, there is a saying, 'No replacement for displacement' that makes me wonder if the Tldi 90 would be the sufficient step up (?) or whether I should go up to a Tldi 115???!!!!

The 115 is only 55 pounds heavier. I would go with that. Other opinions would differ. It depends how you use your boat. I regularly motor 20 miles one way to get a cheese burger with four to six people on board. The extra HP is nice and I doubt that you would regret it.
