A book...

Okay - I've been reading some of the posts, and although I thought I knew the English language, I apparently don't understand the marine application of many words... When you guys talk,
THIS is what it sounds like to me...
Is there a simple book you can recommend, a primer** on sailing terms, boat parts, knots, and other such marine things that it would be good to know while wifey and I are getting ready to start our venture into sailing? I would prefer one that is limited in scope to the modern, single-masted ships we're considering, no need to understand square-rigged ships of lore...
Thanks in advance!!
**PR-EYE-MER for the Americans, PR-IH-MER for the English...

Hey Viz!-
Of course there is always the "bible" on such matters; Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship. It has chapters on what you are asking, plus anything else sailing/marine you might want to know in the future. Very authoritative, well illustrated and written, and great wintertime reading. IMHO if you are planning on buying only a single book for good, this is the one.
- Brian. (ps. my wife likes "Sailing for Dummies", though).

Thank you to everyone! I'll be digging around the local library first, probably, to see if I can find any of those titles...
I spent almost an hour just reading through different terms on here...I have many more letters to read through though!!!

Good site. (Yes, you were right, Rick!)
This was funny...Abaft...LOL...
I also found "iskipper.com" which has some good video's and explanations - not as much detail about the parts and names of things (like a "boom vang", which sounds to me like something the Army does, or a really fast plane...). I was surprised to find out that "sheets" are ropes...it would make more sense for the sheets to be the sails, wouldn't it???

I would strongly recommend you purchase a copy of: American Sailing Association's new full color, richly illustrated, 120-page textbook for its basic keelboat certification (Level 101). First; this is a NEW publication with excellent color illustrations & pictures, second It will more than any other explain the various aspects including terms used by all in its text. I purchased a couple of copies for our kids/grandkids to help them get up to speeed. I know it shortened their learning curve. It is also the book used should you take the basic ASA course. It is available from ASA site info below.

I might add to the list
Sailing for Dummies. I bought the book for my wife last Christmas and she took no offense

Quick easy read full of info presented in a very non technical manner. I would advise start with that and move up the reading chain (depending on your current knowledge).
