Stocking Stuffers...

While at West Marine the other day the helpful clerk tried to interest me in a rigging knife. Being a newbie I got to thinking....do I really need one of those things? Which led me to think - are there other items like that I should get to make my life easier? Sailing gloves? Considering the season, I'm thinking now might be the time to start dropping hints to the admiral!

No, you don't need a rigging knife. And you don't need sailing gloves, either. Get yourself a nice foul-weather suit and a proper set of safety & rescue equipment - that's what's most often missing on mid-sized boats, and when things get dicey (and they will, someday), that equipment is what you'd trade your left t*st*cl* for.

Just one man's HO.

I agree you don't need a rigging knife, but for US OLDER GUYS (Kevin is still young) some kind of tight fitting glove is cool. I use gym workout gloves with no fingers from the fingertips to the knuckles. Cheap enough.

Ditto with Rick on the gym gloves. MUCH cheaper than paying the boat tax to have them called "sailing gloves".

I didn't say I didn't have a knife - - - but I don't have an OFFICIAL rigging knife. I have a serrated baby that could kill a shark :? :!:

Rick

PS Also stocking stuffers for boaters:

Movie video "Captain Ron" and a henway :!:

Also "Summer Rental" with John Candy and Richard Crenna.

Real funny stuff.

Can't forget about "Wind" either. Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey.

This one may be a little bit too expensive to be a stocking stuffer, but my wish list includes a VERY large fan that I could tow behind our boat to create enough wind to fill our sails and get it going really fast. I'd use it on those rare days when the winds off Marina Del Rey are less than 5mph, or, whenever the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. I could also place it in front of our boat so that I could practice and improve my upwind sailing skills.

I saw one in a catalogue that also sold henways. I just have to remember which one.

I keep a Leatherman Wave on me all of the time while on the boat. Most of the time everywhere else. Airports being one of the exceptions :D

We carry a Swiss Army Knife. Its the most used tool on the boat. Although Ive never cut rigging with it. As for something with a spike, a good set of pliers will undo a knot faster than a spike.

Gloves, I use em. I have heavily caloused hands and they still sting at the end of a full day in stout wind. The first time you get a burn when a spinnaker gets away you will never sail without em.
