So question is ... how many people can you load onto a 25 foot sailboat safely?

... thinki'n maybe the accident was the result of having too many aboard a small vessel.

I think 10 people on a 25 sailboat is probably too much. Much would depend on the actual type of boat.

One of the articles states the vessel was a 35 footer and it appears so in the videos when compared to the rescue vessels. Also, I can't make out the keel in any of the photos. I wonder if the weighted keel fell off thus causing the vessel to roll over.


CORRECTION: This video shows it only about a 26 footer in tow. The friend who sent it says the vessel is a Mac D. He owns one.
(He claims to have had 10 on his Mac before with no problem. He suspects either partially-filled or empty ballast tank.)

Its important to limit the number of adults, especially large adults, on the deck of a smaller sailboat. If even a couple of big fellows are on the deck and the boat rocks so they step to the lee side and then grab something to keep from falling this can tip the boat substantially. Think of it this way, the wind has less impact on a sail the more the boat heels as the wind is shed off the sail. Dead weight high above the water line does not shed and in fact creates even more tipping moment the more the boat heels, thus pulling it over.

The question of how many on a boat must be addressed with a combination of size and how much control over these crew members tha captain has. I would take 10 on my boat if they were all 110 to 130 lb woman between the ages of 21 and 35 over 6 big drunk men any day.

A terrible sailing tragedy. Something we all need to study and learn by what it was that caused this.

The lack of a keel or rudders in the video makes me think this must have been a trailerable, maybe even a Mac.

Man, no matter how many times you say it, piloting a boat irresponsibly always leads to tragedy.

Witnesses said they saw the 35-foot sailboat flip over sending all ten people aboard into the water. They also said the boat seemed over-crowded.

"We had passed the boat earlier and I noticed it was overloaded. They were just sailing with their jib, not their main sail which was a little odd," said Campbell.

Campbell also said the retractable keel, a blade underneath the boat that stabilizes the vessel, wasn't down.

"If it wasn't down in the first place it would've rolled over really simple, real easy with one little puff of wind," said Campbell.

Campbell said several of the people were wearing life jackets, but the two men who drowned were not.

They are now saying it's a 35 foot vessel, but it doesn't look like one to me. It looks more like a Mac 26D. And 10 people on a 26D, with the main up and no dagger board on top of it, is beyond irresponsible - it's sheer insanity.

See the slideshow above for pics of the boat in drydock... the boat was a long way from home, as the home port was Tom's River, NJ.

Well there's another one for sailing anarchy. Seems to me Macgregors always make the sinking news in a big way. I wonder why people keep overloading and going turtle with this boat! If I understand correctly this one was not registered and the folks on it did not speak english. Could be something fishy here

I saw the video. It's a Mac 26D.

Sorry. The video you posted is a different one. Go to the Blaze.com. They have the news report from Channel 8 in San diego and their video clearly shows them towing the boat in to a marina. It's a 26D.

Dang ? What was the Captain Thinking?? 10 adults on a Mac and a smaller mac at that...
