just an interesting thought, since the mac is so shallow and light, would it make a good base to deconstruct a couple of 26x's and make up a small catamaran ? , in my head it works ....
Has anyone heard of such a thing being done ?, even with other power sailing hulls ?
Alex.
I dont think so. Although such a creature would probably sail, it would not sail much faster then the X hull alone.
I think the hulls would be too wide. You would need more sail to push the additional wetted surface. Gobs of work engineering the mast step and cross beams. By the time you did all this, plus bought two X model macs, you could definetly buy a really nice gemini cat for sixty or so thousand.
If you got two salvaged macs cheap, it might be worth doing. Maybe prowl insurance liquidation sites to score badly damaged boats to work with.
I did contemplate a trimaran using my v222 and some prindle hulls. But the 222 owes me nothing, and i could get the prindle hulls cheap from a thrashed boat. That probably would have worked well. I could have ditched the heavy keel and probably gained a few knots of speed.
Greg at Grab Bag Sailboats, who deals a lot of used Macs at Casa Rio in MD, claims he saw one down on lake Okeechobee in FL. Can't remember if he talked to the owner or not but said it didn't look like it would sail very well
I am afraid this would be to sailboats /Cats what a Trawler is to Power Boats .. sturdy..stable and SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
Cats are coming into their own, on the high end of the market.. Well High End for me.. I dont have a minimum of $150 to $200K for a boat..
Where to dock is for most of us an issue as well. I dont have $200K for a boat nor do I have $500=$900K for a water front home with room to dock a Cat.. I dont as well have the money ( OK I cannot convince the wife) we have the expendable income to pay $500 or more +++ a month to slip a Cat or some other big boat..
But I can find a lot of nice 3-2-2 Pool homes on salt canals for under $300K and all will allow me to have my in view behind the pool resting on my own boat lift
If you use one white hull and o ne blue hull it would sail in circles...
So let's see - if you got it flying on one hull then dropped down quickly wouldn't it spin out, depending on the color?
There sure would be a lot of noise from all the gear inside flying to the downside!
Besides all that Roger has BTDT, as they produced cats for a short while..I would assume if they sold like Hotcakes and for a profit .... he would still be offering them.. He produced a World , Speed ....Record Setting , Large ( 60+ ' ) Mono hull for a short while, as well.
