This has happened several times and I'm at a loss.

Today, my furler will not furl all the way before the furler line is played out. Now before you start telling me to how to untie the furling line and give it some turns and retie it...

My furler line is set up correctly. When I went out just a couple of days ago, it was just fine. If I furled it all the way, my jib sheets would wrap around the furled jib a full three turns.

But, after a day of sailing in some strong winds, when I go to furl it, I haul my line all the way, and I get zerp wraps of the jib sheets.

This makes no sense.

There are only two possibilities:
1] my sail or my jib sheets are actually made of the same material as a magician's steel rings, such that they can pass through each other
2] the furler drum is somehow slipping

or your sail wrapped tighter than normal and had to spin a few more turns to get it all in.
It happens, just put a few more wraps on the furler line

If you keep tension on your Genoa/Jib sheet as you furl the sail in you will wrap it tighter than if you don't keep tension. Fat furl or skinny furl...you can control that.

I use a sock to cover my furled Genoa so I have to wrap it pretty tight to get the sock to work easily...so I keep pretty good tension on the sheets as I furl to get it to wrap up nice and tight.

Like wise if you adjust your furling line to allow you a nice tight wrap...like I do...then you also have to keep some tension on the furling line as you start to unfurl the sail for use. If you don't keep tension on the furling line it can wrap around the drum loosely filling up all the available drum space before you get the sail completely unfurled...can cause a tangle if you aren't paying attention.

This is more of an issue with a 150 Genoa than a smaller Jib.

Just one more thing to think about.

I had to add about three feet to my furling line, as it seems the PO did not furl the genny (150) as tight as I do. Everything seemed OK, until I tried to refurl it the first time. I am in the habit of keeping tension on the leeward sheet, like Jim said. This to get a tight wrap and prevent wrinkles.

Whenever possible for safety reasons in your outings when the wind first start to blow at an increased force. Let your headsail out and leave semi-loose and pull it back in before the waves build up to see where you stand. The headsail will always be tightest with wind assist. This way you can make any adjustment before any unexpected life threatening conditions that require you bring it all the way in and walking on deck is impossible.

Of course! :slaps forehead: I knew it was closely related to higher winds. It never occurred to me that a tighter wrap would change the equation!
