Reefing question

Post by gyroplanes »

My :macx: appears to have some form of easy reefing hardware installed.

I have a stainless steel "hook" at the aft and near the mast end of the boom. I assumed they were for the reef cringles.... but they don't fit my mainsail.
There are also blocks on the mast that I guess are for a single line reefing of the main. Can anyone help me with this?

I am asking this because I would enjoy easy reefing when I am single handing AND I am about to try implementing and "easy flaking" mainsail idea. Flaking is a poor word choice. I have an idea to lessen the bungee mainsail tie down drama.

I'll attempt to paint a word picture and would appreciate comments.

I plan to anchor a bungee cord line to a spot on the side of the boom near the mast, about 2 feet aft on the boom, probably another anchor point (possibly loop the bungie around a post with a oversized washer head, then aft to a point probably around 3/4 the way aft to a final anchor point.
The other side of the boom would have a bungee diameter sized spacer and oversized washer bolted to it at spacing that will place it between the anchor points on the other side.

Operation should be simple. Once the sail is flaked on the boom, you reach over, grab the bungee and pull it over the top slipping it under the standoff spacer on the boom. Step forward (or aft) and repeat.
The bungee is protected from weather by the sail cover.

Could also serve to shoot clothes pins at the Windex if necessary. :-))
Any holes in my logic?

post up a photo of what you got if you can, and that should help. Alot of people on here have single line reefing installed, so they could tell you if it is a simular set to theirs possibly, and what you need to do to make it work for you. I'm installing my SLR on tuesday from a kit from Blue Water Yachts and will try to help out if no one chimes in before. Cheers

Thank you for the reply.

I will be visiting my boat this weekend and will take pictures of the boom.
A lot of the equipment on my boat came from Blue Water, so there is a good chance it is one of theirs.

I have the Blue Water kit and it's not like you describe. It had a fixed point starbord on the boom at the mast to secure the line and a turning block on the port side opposite that. The reefing line goes from the starbord fix point to the reefing gromet in the sail and back down to the turning block so the line can go to the aft. There is a half eye mid way to retain the line and a turning block at the aft on the same port side. From there, the line goes to the aft reefing gromet and then to a turning block on the starbord side before going to the cleat.

Hope that helps.
