I've been wondering:

Macs are probably one of the most numerous kinds of boats. I've heard of other kinds having races or events particular to their type.

Are there Mac gatherings? Cruises? Races?

Yep, but mostly gatherings. Look at the events and destinations forum on this board.

Also by simply updating your profile w/location you'll probably get a half dozen people in your area wanting to go out.

There are fewer PHRF type events for macs....actually I can only remember Newell and Steve K racing in such an event on the board..at lake mead I think? The SoCal scene has lots of Macs ...Mike I probably can tell you if there is stuff going on.

I'm jut not good enough to race my and even have fun, let alone be competitive. But I got a Boston Whaler Harpoon into the ribbons this summer .....

It would also be helpful for others trying to assist on other issues if you include the boat model and engine make and hp in your profile. Look at the cryptic lines in most folks' profiles for suggestions. I was going to suggest this in your thread about motoring without ballast (I still don't know if it's an , an , or one of the other water-ballasted boats), but this seemed like a good place.

OP is a shiny new owner in CA per previous posts...but not new to sailing

Catigale right: could a paid 3x as much n still need to mod. I am pleased w boat. good buy. Got lots of little things sorted out from captains seat to bimini, and you all have been helpful

Steve and I aren't the only ones racing but we have been going at it since 97 or so. The VYC holds organized races both fun and serious, where Macs both Ds, Ss, Xs and Ms race in San Diego. I haven't been there for several years and miss it. We race on Mead twice a year with LVBMA http://las-vegas-bay-macgregor-assoc.webs.com/ (It's free or low cost) and mostly more fun than serious rules and more of an honor system without a committe boat.

A really fun, well attended and organized event that includes lots of racing is Havasu http://www.sailhavasu.com/. Macgregors have been a big participant the last 3 years and now are the largest group. Bring a Mac of any model and you will have a great time. Not sure if there will be a strictly Mac race this year (13) since KH dropped out of sponsorship. We (Kimo) have been asking Roger (via Mike L.) to become a sponsor.
