Today, I sold my . I had my eye on a , but it sold before I could get back to the owner. Bad timing I guess. So now, I am on the hunt for another . I am looking for some local websites to search through. I did the Mac sites and tried through Craigslist and sailboat owners but haven't found what I'm looking for: a fully-equpped and top of the line boat at dirt-cheap, rock bottom price

I am willing to travel a fair distance throughout the Northeastern US if the deal is right.

Are there any good local used boat listing sites that you might want to share? Or are these like coveted secret fishing holes?

Did you check the listings on this site? Also, eBay often has several listed.

I use http://www.searchtempest.com/ to search craigslist for Ham Radio equipment.Set the distance you would like it to search within.

I will also try that search tempest tool, looks pretty good. I was going through craigslist one state and then one city at a time, it was a little brutal. I did learn a little more about US geography, which is good. Many of the city names are used in songs and tv - kind of nice to know where they are on a map.

I am a bit of a low offer type, so I would not wish to offend anyone here. I really try not to offend anyone anywhere, but some do get quite unhappy when I send along an aggressively low offer. I sell alot of items I don't use and I too get lots of bad offer. In fact, this week I sold my parent's camping trailer. That was alot of work and dealing with bad offers, people not answering back. But it sold, for lower than I wanted, but hey, c'est la vie.

For some reason, I would like to buy in the US and import in to Canada - maybe I'm a sucker for punishment. There are just more boats to choose from and that competition can help prices a little. Mind you, the taxes on the way back in level things off a little.

Anyway, thanks for the tips everyone and keep them coming. It was somewhat sad to see my x go. Now I am boatless and feel so naked. I may need some assistance if things do pan out and a US trip lines up for me in the hopefully not too distant future...

Lowest priced M on Boats.com in the U.S. is $19,500 and it's in Hawaii. They appear to average about $27K on that site. Frankly at that price I think you'd be better off buying a new Tattoo and getting what you want. Hunting down a good deal on an M is going to take a really long time, unless you're willing to take one with a small motor or sans trailer or something along those lines.

I had the same problem when I was looking for an M: The lowest priced I could find were $25K+, and mine new was only $33K.

It's also considerably easier to finance a new boat then a used boat. We were willing to pay cash, but in 2010 BofA gave us a 10 year 2.5% APR loan for 80% of the total value, and at that point the money was so cheap we did it. The boat payment is lower than the slip fees here in Southern California, and equal to what we pay to store it on trailer at a marina.

If you're looking for a great deal, you probably ought to be looking for a 26D or other such classic MacGregor.

Curiosity question, why did you sell your to buy an ?

Both nice boats and dont get me wrong but when I bougth my earlier this year I looked at both models and chose the based on features and size of cockpit/cabin etc. so I would love to know why you would actually sell one to buy the other? What features drove you to do that or are you simply after a younger boat?

That's what I have since discovered. I've somewhat accepted the fact that I may well will be sans Mac for the remaining 6 weeks of sailing season here, and May 15th of next year is my new Macaquisition target date. I'll do what I can to get one in the coming weeks, but no biggie if fall turns into winter.

Very good question. I guess, to see if I could. I got an offer that I couldn't refuse on the and took it. At the time, I had lined up an for a little bit more boat coin, but not too much more, so figured why not? But then, it sold. I really wanted to try an and see the differences between the two by owning each for a long enough period to discover the pros and cons over time. I now know what the can and can't do, love the layout and slightly larger cockpit, but would like to see the 's rotating mast, daggerboard and sliding galley setups, for better and for worse.

I mean, either way, I really love these boats, from concept to execution. I think there's nothing like them. So before I get one and go crazy in modding it to my own personal liking, I figure I'd try both out and go from there. Besides, I also kind of like the buying and selling process, even with all its headaches and lost sleep due to overexcitement. I like talking boats and showing people that may be unfamiliar what the Mac style is all about. Often, they are like-minded people so it's fun.

But now, I am Mac-less and enjoying the hunt for that elusive great deal. Besides, even if the deal on paper isn't so great, what I'll tell people certainly will be

What taxes?

There is no duty on a Mac from US to Canada

And you dont pay tax at the purchase point in the US because you are not a resident

Just met a guy in San Diego washing his new-to-him 26M. He paid $13K. How? Called a guy with an M for sale in Phoenix and said "Call me when you'll take $13K". Eight months later he got a call back.

So I guess there's more than one way to buy a boat.
