Considering Re-re-Power: Am I Crazy or What :|

Hi All,
Am I Crazy or What
I repowered from PO's 35hp carbed Tohatsu to my 06' E-tec 90. While it was Worlds better than what I had, I hate to admit I've never been satisfied with my Wot speed of merely 18 Mph
Over the years, I have "teched" this thing to death even had a Fl tech dialed in to the eng computer while I put it through its paces. 18mph- That's it
I have stayed out of SO many relevant inquiries re E-tecs & 90's, because I've felt unqualified or unsatisfied with my speed/ motor.
i also kept in the back of my mind that post '08 E-tecs acquired iCom capability & I wanted that too
More Speed & iConnwectivity
Anyway, I found a price point I was willing to pay to re repower. I found a 2010, icom capable 90 Etec & bought it. & have planned my re repower.
I have also paid to have both Etec's 300 hr service. Both are ready to go.
Here's where am I crazy comes in. The 2010 90hp will provide icom, but I fear I'll still lack speed. So, I'm con$idering selling or trading both 90s... & buying a V4 115 E-tec... So,
Am I crazy or what?

And you've tried lower/higher pitch on the prop to find the sweet spot/max speed/rpm?

Yup, the iCom gauges are very tempting, but I wouldn't have enough room for them on my pedestal, without some major mods. An interface with a Lowrance GPS would prolly give you the same info, on a multi-tasking screen.
As for the 115 HP power... if that's what you want and what you feel you need, go for it. The transom needs to be beefed up, I think, but it's probably doable.
But then again... why bother? If you wanted speed, you could have gotten a speedboat for the same price.
Easier to launch, too.

Hi Bud
how r u doing these days , more important than HP is CC & that base Torque wave for our heavy boats more so for an

than a flat bot

, my 75hp merc 4 stroke 1730cc block has more torq than the same eng with 115hp , so my engine has more acceleration better fuel economy through all rpm,s ranges except maybe wot , the 115hp has less torq so has slower acceleration is working harder to move our heavy boats so also has less fuel economy until it reaches its wot , ask urself how often u gonna do that wot ! , if u wanna move up the HP ladder also look for more CC & a wider longer torq wave cause if not it,s hp power without B,s unless ur boat is really loaded very lightly , think same eng on

& Bass boat later is very light requires a lot less torq to kick butt ! Just saying for whats its worth

-I'm still dancin with the girl I bought. I'd like a comfortable cruising speed of 18, not Top speed. I am heavily loaded.

I agree with you but I like the Etec features. It's a bit of my having drank the kool aid. Mind you my eng started 1st turn for 7.5 years. While it shortened my season this year, a new fuel pump & tune up now has her good - to be sold.
The Etec 90 does not match your CCs nor torque. Same with many other 75/90 chasis - That's right I said it
Which is why I'm considering going to the V4 115 Etec kool aid. I should then be in your ballpark but with the Etec goodies. I'm not looking to be King of the hill, but I am hoping to be happier. John, your knowledge & input are always appreciated
As it stands, I really can just swap out my 90, & console myself with the iCon & emergency pull start capabilty. & there are 5k more reason$ to stay this hand...
I'm looking for my dealer to otherwise, make me an offer I cant refuse.
But I need this sounding board, either way. So thanks guys

Something is defiantly wrong there I get that with my 60??
How heavily loaded?
What size pitch prop are you running?
Are you going WOT with full ballast in?
I originally wanted a 90 was disappointed with the 60 reproped the 60 and looked at how often I went WOT and am now happy with the 60 though still dream of a 90. I have the icom capability through the NEMA 2000 interface and have found that for faster than hull speed just on plane at about 12.5knots is the best fuel economy at about 1 litre per nautical mile where as going WOT gives me 16.5knots but at the cost of 1.5 litres per nautical mile.
The icom fuel flowmeter is one of the best things for playing around with different throttle and trim settings
PS I get an extra half a knot of speed if I send the crew to the vberth
The Etec 90 does not match your CCs nor torque. Same with many other 75/90 chasis - That's right I said it
But the direct-injection E-tec two-stroke is a more potent performer because it boast a power stroke with every swing of the crank. Four-strokes only build power on every other up and down swing of the crank. So they actually produce more torque from a smaller displacement. The exception here is the Mercury Verado 4 Stroke as they use a force feed combustion chamber that acts like a supercharger giving huge torque throughout the rev range.

My take-away from this is that you might have some outboards for sale

I have to assume that 18 mph is with full ballast?
I just repowered to the Etec90 and see 20mph with full ballast and 24mph with empty ballast. This is a great improvement from my Honda 50 that achieved 8mph with ballast and 16 mph without ballast.
I have said on this forum that Victor's 31mph video of his SuziDF90 set my expectations too high so I was initially disappointed with my results. However when I think about it, I obtained a 150% speed increase with ballast in, and a 50% increase with ballast out. All that for a HP increase of 80%...both results are much better than could be expected from using the power = speed^2 formula. That formula suggests that I should have obtained about sqrt( 1.8 ) = 1.34 times my original speed, or 21.6 mph without ballast.
The ballast-in speed increase has been well explained by Mastreb and others regarding the planing of the hull. And of course there are variations in nameplate vs. actual HP, prop slip, optimum RPM etc. which complicate matters.
If you use the simple power/speed formula with a 115 compared to a 90 that would mean a 13% speed increase for a 27.7% increase in HP. That would bring you to 20.3 mph...doesn't seem like too much gain for the $$$. On the other hand, as my numbers demonstrate, the results obtained by using only the power/speed formula don't correlate very well to what actually happens.

My experience with the Suzuki 90 is:
4 people and heavily loaded for a week on the hook and ballast in - 20 MPH
Same as above but with ballast out - 24 MPH
Everything stripped off for wake boarding - 31+ MPH
I sometimes dream about putting on a Suzuki 140 (only weighs another 40 pounds!). I am sure that if I had the 140 I would dream about a 200.
All that being said I still tend to run at 6 knots 90 percent of the time because running with very little noise is so much nicer and the journey is as much fun as the destination.

Soooo . . . what are you looking to get for the 90? Just asking, is all - don't want to take this thread into the classifieds arena, of course.
I really have no idea what a used ETEC 90 is worth, but I just can't get the idea of upsizing from my BF50 out of my head. An itch I just can't scratch.

Gazmn, Sorry for taking this thread in another direction. Could you tell me about your picture in the 2014 Summer pics. Is that a setback or a jackplate between the stern and engine?
