Who knows (and sails) the Sandy straits?

I know Fresh Breeze spends some time in the lower sections but we are planning two weeks from Tin Can Bay to the top of Fraser on the west side and I have a bunch of questions that I just cant find the answers to, here's some of them.

1. We will have a small dog with us, I understand that Fraser, Big Woody and Small woody islands are national parks but, exactly what is the boundary of those National parks, eg, if I beach the boat (or the tide goes out) am I on a National park or does it start at highest atronomical tide? Our dog will need to relieve himself occasionally, or do I need to beach on a non National Park island?

2. Camping permits, As long as I am on the boat I know I am not camping on Fraser (which requires permits), however what if the tide goes out and my boat is on the sand? Am I camping on Fraser and do I require a permit for this?

3. You are not allowed ot have a dog on Fraser island, including in your vehicle, however if scenario in 2 above occurs am I on Fraser island with my dog in my vehicle?

I dont seem to be able to find anything on these issues on either the NPWS web site or any Googled documents or stories, it's like it's never been done when indeed many many yachties have their dogs on board both in the Sandy Straits and the Whitsundays for that matter.

Cheers, Dennis.

Nobody will hassle ya about permits for sleeping on the boat while it is drying out. We did that on Fraser and we do it everywhere we go.

Can't help with the other questions, but am looking forward to your cruise report because that's the cruise we are doing next year 8)

Hi Dennis, Have a look at this web site. parks.nprsr.qld.gov.au should give you the info you want, But I do know, NO domestic animals are permitted on Fraser, not even in a 4x4 vehicle. Your boat is a different matter. Just do what other boaties do, be quick when the dog has to go! Also keep a watch for dingo's, they just love pet dogs . We have seen dingo's patrolling the beach's on the western side of the island around Gary's anchorage, Elbow Point & The Bluff. We should be on the water soon so we might see you.

Cheers

Did that trip a few years ago from Tin Can Bay and continued up the Mary River, no dramas with sleeping on the boat and wouldn't be worried about the dog, good advice about time and dingo's too but we didn't spend any time on shore due to the midges.
