Hey folks, we need your advice.
Our trusty 2000 Suzuki DF50 on our 2000 broke a timing chain tensioning bracket and needs a power head rebuild to the tune of about $3500, (Block: bearings, seals, rings. Head: guides, valve seats, etc) so we are looking at our options to either do the rebuild, by used, or buy new.

If it grew on trees we would just buy new, but we want to look at all options. We are considering the rebuild because we have had the boat for 9 years and are only the second owners and the original owners only day sailed in the bay, so we know the engine.

We have a line on a 2007 Mercury 75HP 4-stroke EFI. Does anyone had any experience with this engine?
Looks like it might be heavier at 399lbs, but can someone confirm the specs. Would the transom need reinforcing?

I think Beene has an , a much different transom than the , which I think makes a difference when considering a heavier engine.

I bought my eng from I-Boats so did Beene , mine was 10 months old used from I-Boats I pd $4500.00 & she still looked & smelt like a brand brand new eng. when I got her in Mar 2008

PS My Eng was shipped right from BC ! so u might be able to pick one up right there

Does the 2007 merc 75hp need those wedges installed? What are they for?

Yes U will want to install the wedge,s they increase ur trim angle @ least on the , I added that my eng. came from BC so u could poss. save on shipping costs

Yes & u will want to install 2 re-enforcement plates upper & lower on the transom

But the merc75 you cannot anymore tilt up under the helmseat while sailing?!!!

Ps....you can slap a 9.9 HP onto your boat to close out the season...get a used one and unload it next year.

No installation costs!!

Kurtz, are you suggesting the 2007 Mercury 75hp is too big fo tilt up all the way and the cowling (engine cover) will hit the back af the seat before it is all the way up?

We need to be careful and remember that Wind Chime has an . There is a lot more room for the larger motor than on the .

Yes ok, so I referred to the photos from Highlander... Can highlander tilt the merc75 up with the ?

So it turns out the 2007 Mercury (Verado) 75 hp cowling (engine cover) is way TOO BIG! I saw one on model and the owner had to cut-out some of the back of the seat just to get the engine to go into the up position. Does anyone have a photo of the regular 2007-ish Mercury 75hp in the up position, on a model

We have an option of a 2001 Honda 75 HP. (Carb)

Does anyone have this engine on a model ? Will it fit?
Any problems with the carbs versus electronic fuel injection?

I have to check the year of my engine but I am assuming it is a 2002... Mercury Salt Water 2 Stroke Carbs 90 hp. I think it is model ELPTO... fits tight but very much fine and runs like a raped-ape!

This bit of advice seems to have been glanced over. Unless your doing motoring in some major currents, that size motor will work well.

Hey Ray,
Sorry, your great idea was not overlooked but I should have replied back. In fact, I have been watching to see if there is a smaller engine(9.9-25hp) to buy for the rest of the season then re-sell. We have a Merc 2.2hp for our walker bay tender, and a Evinrude 4hp for our 12-foot flat bottom crab and fish boat, but I would not want to go out into our local Pacific currents and weather with less than a 9.9hp (as you suggest).

Other issue is time, our Suzuki DF50 is in the shop in 50 pieces waiting for me to call to give the green light to rebuild. Or, he will install a different engine that we find, and keep the broken Suzuki in lue of payment of installation and time already spent to take a part and assess the damage.
