Main Halyard aft ... like a Cat!

Post by Neo »

Hi All,

In the Mac Mods section there's a "catamaran-inspired solution" for Main halyard aft by Parrothead back in 2007
http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=955

I'm looking to do this with my new Mast but I've discovered that the Harken 140 is no longer manufactured. So I searched high and low and finally found an equivalent, made by Master, a Taiwanese manufacture https://www.mastervoyage.com/hardware_d ... 88&Key=354

Whats your thoughts on this solution?....Has anyone else done it this way?

All the best.

Is there a reason you are not interested in moving aft more lines, i.e. topping lift halyard, halyard forward of the mast, and daggerboard halyard. If you are going to go through the effort of moving one, think about moving all lines aft.

I just recently did that. I looked all over this site before taking the plung.

I installed two of these
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee20 ... 010014.jpg

http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee20 ... 0012-1.jpg

on the base of my mast , but because of my dodger they r a pita to get them to release so I am contemplating on removing the cam cleats from them & moving them aft under my dodger
if u do not have a dodger they will work fine

So Ray, your Haylard is running down the front of your Mast? .... But what happens to the Haylard at/near the base? .... Does that setup effect mast swing?

All the best.

Neo,

The part you found should work, but I don't see the need for it to swivel. Where you are going to attach it, swiveling is a function that won't be used.

I think a swivel mast needs a swivel Exit Block. If the mast has swung to one side and I'm winching the haylard on the other, that's too big an angle for a fixed block, in my opinion.

I'd like to know more about how a halyard is run in front of the mast?
Parrothead's piture shows the setup..... and I'm assuming that block he has, in front of the mast (attached to the mast angle bracket) is for the top-lift :?

Hi Highlander ... what size rope are you currently using for the haylard :?:

Wow!... What a setup!.... All those ropes, your're very organised.

Whats are the advantages of the two sets of spreaders?... I'm guessing your Mac stays in the water most of the time?

Thanks for sharing that.

Neo,

The halyard in font of my mast is not the halyard for the mainsail. It is there to hoist up a variety of items, a lantern for example.

I really like this idea, only 1 piece of hardware to install, it's a lot more KISS than having lines weave through 2-3 blocks before getting to a clutch/cam.

Question, what working load do you think that piece will need? Do you plan on use the Cam as the only thing securing the line?

I put this mode in and found it an easy install and works well. I put another swivel cam block on the port side of the mast too for the jib halyard. I chose a hank on jib because I trailersail a lot. I hank on the jib at the launch ramp, snug the sheets and when I'm on the water I head into the wind and up go the main and then the jib all done from the cockpit. When I ready to go in for docking I reverse the procedure. If its a light air day I'll even put the assymetrical spinnaker on the jib halyard before heading out with the spinnaker stuffed carefully in the v-berth so then I can raise the spinnaker from the cockpit without it getting tangled or twisted.

Yes thats all u need just pull on the halyards to get them where u want them then cleat off , Harken 140 is rated working load of 300# & breaking strength of 2000# which is more than plenty for our halyards no need for a rope clutch , because my dodger interferes with it I have to use a boat hook to get enough force to uncleat them , so I,m thinking of removing the cam cleat from them & moving the cleats further aft poss. beside my rope clutches

my rope clutches r mounted on these brkt,s I designed & fabricated myself they are also expandable if I need more room for more equipment

I finally found an equivalent to the Harken 140. It made by a Taiwanese company called Master.
Today I took delivery of two SPB-2910FAC's ..... http://www.mastervoyage.com/hardware_de ... 88&Key=354

The quality looks good (considering the low price) but it does appear to be a a bit smaller that the Harken.

Anyway just though I let others know that the is an alternative the now discontinued Harken 140.

All the best.
