a yellow x??!! with yellow fenders? don't you think there was some photoshop retouching on this image? btw have a look on the first (white) x: it has it's lee rudder up - how can they sail like this? and: i never have my forehatch open when underway.

No, I think that's for real, Norbert. I've seen pics of that same boat before - they sail out of New York state... browse around on that website and you may see more pics of it. Looks like a nice boat, actually.

As for the forehatch, if there's no great spray and pretty smooth sailing (as it appears here) then I'd leave it open if it were a hot day... it's cheap forced ventliation!

Actually, on a broad reach it is OK to raise one of the rudders to reduce drag. Having said that it looks to me like the white X has raised the wrong one.

The yellow boat really is yellow. They painted it to dress it up, and in real life it really looks pretty nice.

As to the fenders, I've always been told it is bad form to have them over the side outside the harbor, but I'm not immune to forgetting them either Some yacht clubs actually have club rules about where fenders must be taken in and what canvas may be up when and all kinds of little details ... I think I'd be subject to a lot of "punishments" in one of those clubs

When I single-hand, I always put the fenders up/take them down well outside the marina/basin so that I don't have to mess with them while steering around other peoples' boats, so a lot of people in my basin probably think I'm a real wanker - but no one has ever said anything

The yellow boat was painted by the owner. It is actually quite stunning.

As for photoshopping, we took the fenders out of the same picture for the www.ne-ts.com header, but left them in the calendar picture. Hey it's about fun, not perfection. I thought the two sailboats looked quite graceful and so used the shot for the calendar.

We don't have enough photos for September through the end of the year. If anyone has some good ones, would love to use them for the calendar.

I have been on that yellow X. The NE-TS meeting was at their house a couple months ago. The X matches his plane, helicopter, car, etc. The owner likes yellow. Spectacular boat. Flawless finish. Even the trailer looks brand new (still black though).

The White boat in the June photo is mine. My daughter can be seen opening the hatch in a simalar photo taken shortly before this one, at the top of the NE-TS home page.
I've found that raising a rudder does increase speed a little when sailing down wind or on a reach. The photo was taken at the Winnipesaukee rendezvous last year. We just had the the 05 Winni rendezvous last week, but we didn't have as nice weather as we did in 04.

chuck, you're right, i re-looked at the picture and remarked (what i did not realize the 1st time) that you're on a run there. i also agree that sailing downwind at a flat sea is no risk and can help to vent the cabin in hot weather... or simply the kids can get to the bow thru the front hatch. i frequently single hand, and for this reason i always close the hatch before take off. btw had wet sleeping bags last week when sailing upwind in a choppy force 5-6 as my front hatch was closed but isn't really watertight - fortunately it was a sunny and windy day and they dried quickly on the boom.
