shroud stays on 2005 26M
Hi all --
We THINK we have a 2006 26M (the hull number ends in 06) but some paperwork says it 2005, some 2006 so we're not sure. ANYWAY, does anyone know if the 2005-2006 upper shroud stays came with the tang at the top? We have the paperwork for the lengths (it's on the original packing list) but it doesn't specify whether it had that little tang. We're building our new standing rigging and trying to figure the exact lengths.
Thanks!
Leah

Contact Blue Water Yachts. I believe they would have the answers you need.

We did contact them. Ezra said he wouldn't give us measurements for the shrouds. He said he'd sell us new ones but wouldn't give us any info for us to do them ourselves. We already have the parts so it's not like we would throw it out and buy their's rather than try to find the info but I suppose they consider it proprietary and don't want to lose business.
At any rate, we got our info after comparing out measurements with mastreb and neo on former posts. So were all good! I should try to delete this post so it isn't another thread to sift through.

If you post your summary findings here, we can rename the thread for reference.
I dont understand why a business would take that stance. Not smart.

Same reason doctors and lawyers don't just give out advice, they become responsible for the outcome as professionals. If Ezra gave out a measurement to Global and it turned out to be wrong then they would blame BWY and Ezra. Most businesses that make custom items, cabinets, counter-tops, cut granite/stone, machine shops almost always have a policy where if they do not measure it, they are not responsible if it does not fit and will usually not warranty said item if not installed by them either.Catigale wrote:I dont understand why a business would take that stance. That's an interesting way to look at it. He did, however, say it was because he felt they were losing business, not because of a liability issue. Besides the fact that they sell all the parts and pieces for do it yourselfers (we bought the tangs and stay adjusters from him). The stay lengths are not custom design so it's hard to compare that to a granite install - I don't think Ezra was gonna fly to Hawai'i to measure our stock 26M. All that said, he wasn't rude about it, he was pleasant and I think just trying to keep himself busy.yukonbob wrote:Same reason doctors and lawyers don't just give out advice, they become responsible for the outcome as professionals. As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll post the factory lengths of all of it.

Not trying to make a direct comparison, I was generalising. If you ordered 20' of cable from them and it turned out you needed 22' I doubt they'd refund you (not that you wold go looking for it, but there are those people out there). Now if they had screwed up the measurement it'd be on them. Most companies also hate taking stock back as it can be labour intensive to re-stock the item and update the books, order sheets and so on. To re-stock ten small items worth less than a hundred bucks can end up costing a company more than they'd make on the sale to begin with, hence you get re-stocking fees sometimes to cover the man hours.

In the service industry you are selling knowlage and experience. They know exactly how to make the stays for your boat from doing it and making mistakes. That is how they make their living. Selling parts is not even going to pay the rent on their building. Next time you car breaks call the dealer and ask them to tell you what is wrong so you can buy the part and fix it yourself, see what happens.

Exactly Grady. And they're lucky to make a 200% markup (50% of the retail price) and still be competitive. So for 100 bucks of sales they might get 50 bucks to cover rent, power, wages, insurance, taxes and the list goes on. When they have to restock that pretty much gets halved to do it all over again. Yes I've been on there and try to help where I can, but with boats it is hard cause as a captain you should be able to repair most anything on your boat by yourself IMO. Rant over
