Maybe an alternative to Starboard? Since this is exterior grade I presume it is UV stable. Can be painted as well.

I think what you're missing is the alternative to Star Board. You're right, the king has no clothes...

You guys in the USA are so lucky you can get so much stuff so cheap from your local hardware store, our hardware warehouse type things are just rubbish, with a very limited range of everything and they charge the earth for it.

This may just be a business opportunity.

No, not over here, we have pretty much one hardware chain, one of the bigger world wide companies (Woolworths) tried to take them on opening around 30 stores, they lasted about 3 years and ended up shutting down all their stores, more I think because they tried to be to much like the existing store but didn't keep a range of budget equipment for the occasional handyman. Pretty hard to justify paying $120 for a hand drill when you use it a couple of times then it sits in the shed for 18 months, the existing store has an exclusive deal with a mob that makes cheap but serviceable tools that you can pick up for $30 that will do the job and who cares if you have a $30 tool sitting in the shed for 18 months without using it. A store needs a budget range to draw people in in my humble opinion, I have many of these cheap but serviceable tools and they are great value for money

There was a commercial for Burger King a few decades ago that had an old lady asking, "Where is the beef?" I remember it because the lady reminded me of one in my own family...and that brings me to ask, "What is the alternative to Starbaord?"

My guess is he is talking about material like this:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Veranda-HP- ... /203733425
I was considering it for making the frame of a new galley cabinet fascia. The reason (for me anyway) it would be better than Starboard in this case is that it can be glued with PVC cement. Gluing Starboard is like trying to glue Teflon together.

My Bad. I obviously forgot the link. Thanks to Paul I for covering my posting error. This stuff cuts like butter with a miter saw, table saw,or band saw. The surface is semi gloss and smooth. When you cross cut (ex.brick moulding) the cut surface is porous. I haven't attempted to router or shape it as yet. However the exposed edge would be not be smooth like the manufactured surface. I would assume any exposed cut or shaped edge will require painting for appearance and ease of cleaning.

I have used 1x6 as part of my gutting and rebuilding the head in my X so we can actually use it.
The boards cut and route just like a soft wood but, with no grain they do not hold wood screws very well.
They hold screws enough to pull the boards tight for the pvc glue to set.
So far, I can verify that a damp rag cleans up everything I have accidentally gotten on them.
You can get all kinds of edge mouldings.
Given the target use is outside, I hope it would hold up to sun/weather, but I have not left anything out to find out.
For those interested in my bathroom, I cut out the sink/floor, gained about 7 inches when you stand directly on the hull,
put the porta where the sink was due to the overhang immediatly above the sink.
The main structural support for the boat runs under the bathroom, so while in the head facing the door your toes are against the support and your heels are higher than the toes.
It gives my 5'10" 270lb (ya I am overweight) just enough height to put my clothes back on.
Washup is in the kitchen sink.
I can show picts of how the boat is built under the head floor if this is interesting to anyone.

I,ve use similar recycled plastic board for interior shim spacers to fill the gap between the cabin walls & the cabin liner when I installed my opening portlights , yes the edges r porous but was not an issue for what I used it for , u can try using a heat gun & knife to melt the edges & smooth them out !
I,d not use it for a face & or back-up plate for anything that requires strong support because it,s porous it,s more on the brittle side but is ok for using as a stiffener as I did between the cabin walls & liner for my portlights
I,m in the process of making a base mount for my new double radar arch & removing my single one in the pic below if u look at the upper support leg of the old arch u will notice a 1/2" tapered 3 1/2" dia. white face plate under the 3 hole mount
These were made from a used white plastic deck door bought at a marine flee market they have been on there over 5yrs & still as white as the hull & they r solid so very strong , so depending on how much u need , maybe check out ur local marine flee market if u r lucky enough to have one near u !

I used some old cutting boards for the same spacer duty. Cut in half, so I had to snake them in to each side with a string or wire so I didn't drop it into the space. I didn't care about the finish of the edges, as they were only space fillers. Worked very well, and were essentially free since they had knife marks all over them and were headed for the recycle bin.
I've used the PVC outdoor 'lumber' from the big box stores, but only for trim work where they get wet a lot, like the trim around the bottom of the square columns on my front porch, where they meet the concrete. They're pretty impervious to getting soaked constantly. Never used it on the boat, but I do keep it in mind for when I redo the galley.

Umm, and alternative to "starboard" I guess for a fighter pilot it might be "3 o'clock" ?

Or for other folks it might be the "right" side or a politician might say 'conservative' or perhaps the "good" side.
Gee, that's a hard one.
Are there any alternatives to "starboard"? I really don't know. I suppose if you painted it red it could be "left", right?

I think some overseas living goes a long way to orienting Americans as to just how lucky we are about many (not all ) things.
