26X PHRF

There is a 26X in the North Carolina PHRF with a rating of: 273. Does anybody know this boat and skipper? I am trying to race my X on the Lake Pontchartrain Wednesday night races, but need some sort of reasonable rating less than 300.

255 non spin, 234 spin. Reasonable?

Thanks Jimmyt,

255 may be reasonable. My next step is to find out what measurements and observations, were made by the handicapper, in coming up with this rating. Having raced my 26X against other boats, mostly Macs, Hunters and Catalinas, I believe a handicap close to 300 to be the most fair. My main question relates to how the handicapper gives consideration to the plane-ing hull form of the X versus the displacement hull form of virtually all other sailboats.

Thanks for the information, I printed it and plan to go forward with my application to race tomorrow. :macx:

Most of the listings at ussailing.org are 213-230. Manitoba has a 240, and North Carolina shows 273.

So, there is little consensus.

Hopefully you can get them to bite at 255. If they do any research, you're likely to get stuck with something lower...

It's all about fun, though, right?

I was racing in monthly 'family fun' series in San Diego, mostly single handing. They gave me a 225 I think. I was in first group to start and would be the last to finish about 2-9 minutes. Several times my corrected times moved me up 1 or 2 positions. I never could get several other 26Xs or Ms to come out, which would have been fun. Reviewing SOG averages and highest SOG for each race on RaceQs showed that moving my mast aft several degrees may have improved pointing and speed. I didn't experience my past roundup problems returning.

Hope to work out a rating and compete in the Wednesday night series beginning this coming week, or if that fails, run their course on RaceQs see if the boat performs consistently here in NOLA.

Epiloge: We raced the first race of the series, after dark in gusty winds with 40+ boats from the Lake Pontchartrain clubs. Covid-19 canceled the next race and the series until last week, May20. Due to the impending lockdown, we trailered home at the end of April, with several mechanical problems, arriving safely April 2.

I was somewhat intimidated arriving onto the race course by the size of the boats, windy conditions, no-one talking on the Vhf and what looked like total chaos. I couldn't see the start line or committee boat and didn't know the 2nd group started later. Intimidated, held back and started almost last. Soon the early boats were coming back straight at us, which is un-nerving in dark conditions. The race course is simple: A-B-A. Finished close to last, was timed out because they end the race 45 minutes after the first starters finish.

The 273 PHRF placed me ahead of 1 other boat with a 235 rating. Will not be intimidated next year and looking forward to racing my X with another modification that is in the planning stage. :macx:
