26X center board split

Post by beechkingd »

My 1995 26X center board was split down the middle on the leading edge. It was 2 sections about each 1.5 feet long. It I'm not sure if it's from freezing or erosion of the substrate. I was looking at the fill and drainage holes and it looks like it would retain an inch or so of water when retracted and I guess that could cause it to split out. I'm planning to drill some additional drainage holes to allow it to fully empty. Anyone run into this before?

With the drain holes functioning well, not plugged, there shouldn't be a freezing issue. I did have an issue when I bought my boat where the previous owner hit a rock or something that cause a large split in the centerboard. I repaired it myself and as part of the repair, I filled the leading edge with thickened epoxy to give it more strength and structure. As a side effect, the thickened epoxy reduced the amount of room for water inside the CB but, I did make sure to maintain the ability of the CB to drain and prevent any freezing issues.
