cockpit cushions for X

Post by rszobel »

I want to make some bottom and back seat cushions as well as rail and seat cushions for my stern rail seats. for the cockpit cushions, i am wondering if anyone has ever made patterns for the cockpit cushions for an X - it would save me a lot of time.

also wondering if for something simple like cushions, would a standard sewing machine without walking foot be able to handle sunbrella fabric - would only be 2 layers at the seam (without piping). opinions? I would like to purchase a good sewing machine so i can make a stack pack as well, but not ready for that purchase yet!

I've done dodger window replacement using a vintage Pfaff 259 sewing machine, which is a 260 without the fancy stitch cams. It does not have a walking foot. It is relatively heavy duty, and had no trouble handling multiple layers of Sunbrella plus vinyl window. It's not as heavy as portables built for sailmaking, like the Sailrite Ultrafeeds with walking foot, though.

Here's a short video of me replacing a window with it.

I can only respond to making the pattern.

I have an :macm: , but making the pattern would be no different on an :macx: .

I didn’t have any brown paper to make a pattern, so I Scotch Taped a bunch of brown paper grocery bags together, placed them on the cockpit seats, and rubbed a pencil around the seat edges to make a pattern. It was easy. I took them to an upholsterer, had hm make box seat cushions about two inches thick. I chose black Sunbrella. These cushions have been on the boat for fifteen seasons. They are still quite black; contrary to general knowledge, they don’t get hot in the sun. I used high density foam for comfort. Because of Sunbrella’s water repellency, the foam core never is wet. The black cushions go really well with the black and white of the boat. Many years as an interior designer.
