Gulf Islands-Cancelling due to high gas prices-$2 a gallon

Post by BK »

 :macx: :macm: I am planning on being in the San Juan Islands in June, 2004 to leave for a tour of the Gulf Islands. Anyone interested in going? How about you, Duane? My schedule is open. I can be up there by the 10th of June.
I was watching a travel show on the San Juans Islands and it said that June is the high season for the San Juans due to the Orca whales are there to catch the Salmon and many people come to see the show.

Might be tough

Post by Duane Dunn, Allegro »

An extended trip in June might be tough for us. Right now the last day of school for the kids is June 17th and we just had two snow days that will extend the year. We could certainly make a night or two over a weekend.

I don't know if I'm up for planning a big group trip this year. For anyone who missed it here is what we did last summer.

We would like to get up to the gulf islands sometime however.

route in the Gulf Islands?

Post by BK »

Duane, glad you can make it for a weekend in June, looks like the 19th and 20th or 25th through the 27th would be good for you.
What would be a good route for the Gulf Islands? We could all meet Friday at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and power over to the Gulf Islands from there.
Rolland, how open is your schedule?

That date, June 18-22, is fine with me. I hope you realize that I have not been to the Gulf Islands although I was in last year's flotilla of the San Juans. Lets meet Friday at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island on the 18th to leave early on the 19th. I will send you my cell number or call me on the VHF channel 71 every hour after 5PM. My boat is "Seabird".
You will need a passport to re-enter the US at Friday Harbor. I probably will be staying longer in the Gulf Islands than 4 days so if someone wants to join for a longer stay that will be fine with me.

high gas prices to the San Juans

Post by BK »

:o Due to gas prices hitting $2 a gallon today, 2-20-04, in Los angeles, My wife and I are holding back on our Gulf Islands and Florida Keys trips. I tow with my RV which gets 8MPG under tow. We are shutting down our driving and will sell the RV if the gas price continues this way. It is cheaper to stay in hotels than driving a RV. Sorry for the trouble and the change of plans. The Gulf Islands did not seem to be very popular on this site anyway.

BK,

I suffer too with my Expedition (27 gal tank). I am sorta planning a trip back to the San Juans in'05. Would likely retrace some of our stops from '03 and on to Victoria. Will be in Vancouver in may and have planned a day trip to Victoria. Was going to find you a nice placemat of the area!

2$ per gallon... lucky you! in germany the fuel is actually at about 1.10 per litre, this is about 5$ per gallon based on the current $/ exchange rate. even more at the marina gas stations. a good reason to hoist the sails, wind is still free!
