That's a heck of a journey for the best of boats, much less a 60 year old 18 footer being piloted by an 83 year old man with only an old trolling motor for auxiliary power! He says "Why not? If you don't do crazy things, you'll live to be old and they'll put you in a nursing home".

This guy will be starting his trip from Conneaut, Ohio about 30 miles west of me. Maybe I'll see him at the end of his first day of sailing in Erie.

I hope he picks a good weather window. That's not a lot of boat for a crossing like that...

In 2002 I did one day from Lorain to Cleveland that almost put me off the water forever.

Lake Erie might be the most dangerous part of the voyage.

You're probably right about that. Lake Erie can get super gnarly with limited warning. When storms kick up, we get big, steep waves with short duration. The hourly weather forecast is a good base line to plan from but always keep an eye to the sky and be ready to head for shore if thunderstorms pop up. I've seen gentle 5 to 10 mph wind becomev20 to 30 mph within an hour. Lake Erie has very few protected harbors or inlets to offer any shelter and much of the coast line is steep shale cliffs. I'm fortunate enough to have my Mac live on Presque Isle Bay... arguably the best protected harbor on the lake, and the bay/state park with 13 miles of beautiful sandy beaches are only 5 miles from home.

And you can lock through your channels.

😃

If you go 3 feet to starboard of the marked channel , though, you are aground.

Happened to a very good friend of mine.

Oh hull No! While I’m sure it will be changed- my original comment had Nothing to do with a Hull :|

While I love the spirit, I say Nay Nay to the premise. Barring a merciful weather window and plain ol’ Good Luck… :? Don’t press the ‘Luck of the Irish’ [God Love ‘em] for plain ol’ foolishness!

There are those that have rowed across in one man boats but most of those guys are a LOT younger and could give an Olympian a run for their money.

Single sailor crossings must be an endurance test even for the young and able bodied.
There are enough Irishmen along the Great Loop for him to meet. Heck if got down here I’d buy him a bottle, never mind just a drink! :D :D

It would be nice to keep track of him and his progress though…..
