Sail identification

Hello all. Ive got a quick question.

These are the 2 headsails that came with my 80 Venture 2-22. I have no clue if the are original or from some other boat or...???

The (smaller) one on the right... that would be my jib, Im guessing.

And the larger one on the left, would that be a genoa? A 150% genea? Or can that be deduced from a picture.

And finally, its my understanding that the smaller jib would be a go-to general purpose sail, whereas the genoa (of whatever percentage) would be for days when theres almost no wind...????

Im sure these are some baby-basic questions, so please dont laugh :P. Im learning. Or trying to, at least!

Measure the three sides of each sail and compare to this:

The small side of the triangle (bottom of sail), compared to the measurement from the bow attachment back to the mast on the boat, is how you figure out the % jib or genoa, but that won't tell you if it's made for your boat or not

If the numbers from the Sailrite link match the measurements of your sails (allowing for a little stretch and/or shrinkage over age) then you can be pretty sure they were made for (or will work on) your boat. You are correct that the smaller sail is probably a working jib and the larger one is probably the genoa. The genoa can be used in place of the jib for most points of sail but it will not work as well as the jib when you are trying to go as close as you can into the wind. The jib will work better for that. On the other hand the genoa will be much better going downwind except in the strongest winds.
