What is the best way to remove silicone from the fiberglass? I found a lot under the stanchions and windows. I want to remove the silicone the best way possible to get rid of all the the contamination before I do any repairs, sanding or painting.

In case anyone else runs into this issue, I used a razor blade to scrape off as much as I could. Then wiped the area with naphtha and scraped it again. Did this multiple times and most came off. I plan on sanding the area to get the remaining off.

3M, the maker of 4200/5200, makes a remover that removes these adhesives, as well as other adhesives. As with any chemical, read & follow the directions and use appropriate protective gear.

I’ve always resorted to sanding. On metal or paint, it seems like you can peel, scrape, and rub it away. But on gelcoat, it seems to get into the surface pores, and you really need to get rid of that surface layer.

I’d be interested to know if that remover (or any other) works.
