That is so sad to see. Glad no one got hurt though and glad that it's not fully submerged. Should be usable still I would think, based on the photo at least, but what a mess

Either ballast not in or the drain hoses leaked. Or both. The only way it would look like that is if it was on the bottom. It would right itself and the floatation would keep it upright. I would think a good pump and flip her right back up. Damage should be minimal. The motor might even be out of the water in the pic.

Its on a freshwater lake too. Will need a good cleaning no doubt. Luckily no one seemed to be in it.

Would love to know the story. It seems to be sitting on the bottom in shallow water. Lot's of junk on the deck.

According to the article, the boat was observed slowly sinking, and then turned on its side. In that shallow of water, the ballast may not have been in? It would be informative to find out where the ingress was?
It looks like a nice lake.

Never would have expected to see that. It's does nicely demonstrate the floatation working in a Mac.

Don’t know if there are water level fluctuations on that lake. Looks like it either was moored in shallow water, or broke loose and ran aground; then got blown over, or fell over. With all of that crap on deck, the center of gravity and windage is likely much higher than it should be.
My thoughts are, it wouldn’t have to even have a leak to be in that condition. Just run it aground and knock it down. As Tsatzsue said, it appears to be aground.

Maybe. News interviews can be very unreliable. Could they confuse a knock down with sinking. Did the writer quote the witness, or put it in their own words? You would think an email would be accurate. There is no mention of the boat being normally moored there.
It certainly could have sunk. Vandals could have left the hatch open, or it may have deck leaks and it may have flooded with rain water. No telling how long it has been left unattended. Knowing how the boat is designed, the weak link is the motor well/sink drain through hull and piping (as pointed out earlier). But who knows what owner mods have been done? I remember the operable port holes installed below the rub rail incident that led to a sinking. I wouldn’t have guessed someone would do that either.

Since I like to overanalyze everything.
What's with all the fuel tanks above deck? Or are they water? Are there more on the other side submerged? A lot of weight above deck.
Is that a propane tank? Could be a fender, but I would expect a fender to float high or maybe it's a fender tied to the port side and being pulled under.
Speaking of fenders, there are a lot of them. This boat wants to be at a dock not a mooring.
What's all that junk behind the cockpit? It looks like a live aboard or someone expecting to be out for a while.
We know from the promo videos, tipping the boat 90 degrees will keep the companionway above water and won't flood.
Reports said it was sinking at 3pm. Something went wrong. The stock M has ONE thru hull on the transom for the motor well/sink drain. It's pretty janky without a seacock to shut it off. A failure there could be catastrophic. Fill the boat with water and it will easily lay down, especially with cans of liquid on top of the deck.
If the captain installed some more thru hulls incorrectly, that could be a failure also.

Well, for me the discussion and guesses are at least making me think of things I should avoid that could lead to this type of situation for my boat! Storing heavy things on deck while unattended is on my list now, for example (although I've never done so)
Man, that is a BIG lake. With all those fenders out, it does seem likely that it blew away from a dock somewhere. I have had my boat drag anchor before in heavy wind, requiring me to chase it down and find it in shallow water near a different shore, but thankfully it's never tipped over or run hard aground etc. Even with the weight of those cans up top I don't think it would tip over if fully ballasted from being blown into shore unless there was water coming inside
