Not sure what you guys in the USA pay for insurance...My boat is covered as a rider on my homeowners policy and costs me about $150. /year for all perils

Mine cost me $600 a year for full coverage, probably because its new and I live in a Hurricane area. But what ever you do stay away from anyone associated with Met Life, they are bigger crooks than the government.

One additional item to consider: umbrella liability coverage. This is additional liability coverage above your liability limits on home, auto and boat.
A typical umbrella amount is $1,000,000, which supplements your auto/home/boat liability limit (typically $500,000).
Why consider an umbrella policy? Because of our lawsuit-happy society.
My agent said if you have 2 of these four items, you should have an umbrella policy: dog, teen drivers, live on water (which might include owning a boat), (forgot the fourth item).
Now the kicker. You usually need to have all your insurance with the same company to get a liability policy. So this might knock BoatUS out.
I have State Farm and I pay about $200/year boat insurance and about $250 for the umbrella.
I agree

I am with State Farm a little higher on the boat9 very full coverage with a decent med plan) but equally lower on the Umbrella.

USAA, if you can get in.
In a county adjacent to the Gulf, boat trailered tamely at home.
$210 a year, $280 deductible.
This company pays for mistakes like maybe you blew a hole in the side of your boat trying to load a shotgun. No problem.
One of these no middle man outfits. Just send in the receipts.

Did you insure your boat at 26 feet or 25 feet 10 inches?
Does it make much or a differance?

by Catigale
The big difference was where you stated you intended to use it.
Catigale was about $200 if I stayed inland lakes, but goes up to about $350 if I wanted to add coastal cruising.
Ive been staying with the inland policy but may have to change next year as we might do a lot more coastal stuff.
James - Boat US can quote you online, so you could test the impact of 25+ vs 26 feet in a couple keystrokes...

I'm not gonna even ask how you know that, SJB!

USAA is a good way to go if you can. I had auto and boat with them, but could not get the umbrella policy with them. Why? Because I am in an area that they were not writing new homeowners policies in. And unless you had all your liability policies with them you could not get the umbrella policies.

I did the BoatUS online quote thing and got back a $1K quote for all-hazard for a 26x in Atlantic coastal including Florida Eaast & West coast.
Why would that be so much higher than $600 for a Mac in Daytona Beach or $250 for one in Tampa?

The owners association for my new boat (Gemini 105) just did a survey and it looked like Allstate did very well. Don't know if this tranfers over to X insurance. Best Idea simply shop it around & make sure coverage is adequate for your travels. Mine covers SOCAl and parts of mexico

Argo ...
I also found widely varying quotes from BoatUS website.
Whatever you do, DO NOT cue your quotation request as a motorsailer~! Just enter the Mac as a "sailboat" and then enter 50hp for the motor. I'll bet that changes your quote by a bunch!
