This is my first time I really had to get my outboard ready for Spring. Changed the oil and started it with no problem, however changing the oil in the lower end has proven to be a big hassel. I guess in theory I'm supposed to squirt the oil in the lower hole and it's supposed to come out of the top hole when full. A little thing called gravity is making this difficult. The oil never seems to fill to the top and instead squirts out around the bottom opening, leaving an oil slick in my driveway. Any suggestions to make this chore easier? (tilting the motor up, filling from the top or any special tool maybe?) Thanks, and Happy Easter to all.

Chuck, I tried to follow the Honda repair manual instructions last October. Got half the lube on my clothes, the remainder of the lube went on the ground.

By chance I found a gear lube kit for the Honda at WalMart in the marine parts area.

It is a gear lube pump kit with 5 mm and 6 mm adapters that screw in the lower end lube drain hole.
You open the top vent, then screw the adapter in the drain hole.
Then you pump the lube in the lower end until it flow out of the vent hole. No mess!

The kit sells for around $10.00. I believe it is named something like "Suzuki lower end lube kit and adapter". Read the fine print and it says there is a 6 mm adapter included for a Honda BF50.

I had the exact same experience my first time...I got a similar kit to Luke's although I had to buy a Merc kit and a Honda adapter separately... It makes putting the oil into the lowerg unit a breeze.

Just using the 1 quart bottle works fine for me. Just cut off the tip, push it in the lower hole and squeeze the bottle for a few minutes. Just a few drips into the pan I put underneath it. If you push the bottle too hard, maybe it kinks the spout or something. Also it might be easier on a warm day when the oil is thinner. But if a $10 kit fixes the problem, who am I to argue?

Once the oil shows at the top hole, replace the spout on the lower hole with a finger. Put the screw back in the upper hole and without the air hole, at the top, the oil will stay in while you replace the lower screw. I never lose more that a couple drops this way.

Stopped by WalMart and looked at a discontinued gearlube pump they had marked down to $5.50 that was suppose to fit the 32 oz. bottle. Looked at the Pennzoil lube and it came with a free pump.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't find a pump at WalMart, but I was able to get one at Honda marine dealer for about 11 bucks with the adapter. It made changing the oil a breeze.
