Hello all

Can anyone give me a simple comparison of miles per hour (US) to knots. I use as a rough guide 1 knot equals 2km/hour. :macm:

Multiply your MPH by 0.86898 and you'll have the speed in knots.

BTW, there are lots of useful calculations here, as well as an interesting horizon chart.

I just use 1.1
Take the mph, move the decimal point over one, and add.
8 mph = 8.8
10 mph = 11
12 mph = 13.2
15 mph = 16.5
20 mph = 22
8,000 mph = 8,800
2,000,000 mph = 2,200,000

and so on.

....and tell the Admiral you need to buy 'Master and Commander' on DVD to show the kids the derivation of 'knots' for nautical speed.

...and to learn how to pick a pocket or two...

Helaku is right. I was going in the wrong direction.

[quote="Helaku8 mph = 6.95 knots
10 mph = 8.68 knots
12 mph = 10.42 knots
and so on.[/quote]

10 knots = 11 mph ( + / - )
12 knots = 13.2 mph ( + / - )
2,000,000 knots = 2,200,000 mph ( + / - )
and so on

Ha ha..I just watched Master and Commander last week with my two kids (7 and 8yrs old) and they LOVED it. Now The admiral wasn't home, so that is how I got away with watching it....or it would have been something like Herbie goes to Montecarlo.....yikes

Actually the closest conversion is: 1 nautical mile =1 and 1/7th statue miles! Therefore 7 nautical miles=8 statue miles.
