Hi Folks...I just launched my

last weekend and noticed that I seem to building up a white residue on the lower unit right along the seam between the upper and lower unit. Is this normal or do I need a new gasket or something???
Thanks!
Rich

My Merc 50 used in fresh or salt water, collects white deposits of minerals from where lake water and rain is caught in low spots on the motor castings. The water dries leaving a white crusty mineral coating behind. It cleans off easily with a mixture of 50% white vinegar and detergent solution.

Thanks for the suggestion, however, my zinc is like brand new, and is in fact the original. My motor is always stored up out of the water. when the boat is not actually underway. Because of the tilt, certain areas of the motor castings create little pockets where lake water, rain water, and boat cleaning water will collect. It eventualy dries, leaving a mineral deposit, which cleans off easily with a light application of vinegar and detergent on a rag or sponge. Just like the deposit left on dripping faucets, bath tubs spigots, etc. Probably mostly CA, K, Na. Therefore, my remarks.

Thanks guys...I'm guessing from your remarks that I don't have anything to worry about...I was just worried that maybe the location of the white powder might be a sign of a faulty gasket between the upper and lower units...
Thanks,
Rich.
