School year ends for me July 16th. Anyone want to go to Santa Barbara Island and see the elephant seals. Leaving on Sat. morning about 7am. the 17th from San Pedro, cabrillo launch ramp, motor over at 11 to 12 knots for a 4 hr run to Santa Barbara Island, anchor, snorkel and go ashore. If the anchorage is calm spend the night there, or if not sail to Isthmus that evening (downwind and swell). Or moor at Emerald bay to go cliff diving on Sunday. then bus ride monday to the trail head for mount orizaba. kayak the sea cave and hang out at isthmus on tues. and sail back tuesday afternoon. Bring your own mac or you can ride with me, just split for gas, around $70. My wife won't be going since she is visiting her sister that week in Chicago and I could scout out the adventure level for Santa Barbara Island to see if it isn't too rough for her to go next time. I may pool a few past students who are excellent swimmers and sailors from the topsail program. One guy was even a youth ambassador on a tallship sail from England to Norway. If you are not afraid of young people and adventure then are there any takers out there for fun? And of course safety first.

You typo'd July in your first line, but clearly meant June.
Sounds great fun, but I won't be in SoCal then. The original plan last summer was to cruise from SB City to Santa Cruz island, then that nice day-long downwind sail to Santa Barbara island, and finally on to Catalina. Have a great trip!
I meant June 16

Thanks for noticing, I did mean June 16.
I just realized that conflicts with fathers day so how about Monday June 19 to Thursday 22nd ?
We could help each other anchor and get safely to the landing stairs. I hear there is a solar powered ranger station there. It would be fun to visit, maybe it will even have an open house?
I'm already booked for a Carribean and Alaskan cruise this summer. so this timeframe works for me. I would have liked to go with you all on the run down from Santa Barbara, but maybe next time.

I made a couple trips out to SB Island last year on live aboard dive boats. The first trip we ended up turning around and heading for Catalina due to rough conditions. Diving with the young sea lions was amazing. They zoom around and will come right up to you and stare into your mask with their soulful eyes.
I would love to go out again on my own boat once I get a better feel for how it handles the offshore conditions. One thing to keep in mind when checking the conditions although SB is technically in the "inner waters" you will be subjected to the "outer waters" conditions going over there. Probably nothing the Mac can't handle.
Be safe and have fun.

Ha. That did cross my mind... great whites do love sea lions. Poor Swen.
