removable ladder - 26m - deck strength

Hi Guys,

Im considering buying a removable 6 step ladder to be installed on a 26M as seen here (locks in on small brackets permanently fixed to deck):
http://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemd ... lutePage=1

The bottom section folds so it could nearly remain in postion for day sails etc

The aim is to install additional brackets port and starbord front and back to cater for most conditions as we have found the rear boarding ladder usless (not many jetties over here, so beach landings it is - and ladder is at rear in the deep stuff).

My question is will the standard 26m deck take the weight?, or will it need strengthening and reinforcing from the underside. ?.... if so...how?? glass in some marine ply??.. enough?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings from Plano ,Tx

The only place I see you can use this ladder is along to cockpit area, we need to have one that might be able to attach at the stanchon opposite the mast step .

I'd say you can install brackets for that ladder using just underdeck washers on the thru-bolts. The deck is plenty strong. However, not sure how many places on the boat that you'd expect to add the brackets. The ladder will need different length stand-offs for using it bow vs. stern ...
and the bow stand-offs need to differ left vs right. :?

Hi Grimo,

I'd try emailing BWY. I got my boarding ladder from them. It slips onto the aft rigging tracks between the last 2 stanchions; port or starboard. I've never thought to see if it would work forward; I'll try to remember to check on that the next non-rain day we have around here (don't hold your breath). $200 USD. Works great, is removable when not in use, and no holes to drill :D

Hey Grimo,
Yeah I'd be a bit careful about deck strength. I put a little swing down ladder on the port side at the bow. The flex in the deck was a bit, so I needed to modify the ladder to make the botton step push against the side of the hull - that took care of the twisting moment which was flexing the deck upwards. There is a picture of the bow ladder in the Modifications under Exterior, Craig Garlick, Cabin and deck cover. Also in Exterior, there is an item showing what we did for the Swim and Boarding Ladder.

With these 2 modifications we cover our needs for getting on and off the boat from shore and deep water. The bow ladder is what I use for getting on and off from a tender - its easier than trying to get around the rudders and motor.

Cheers
