When we bought our X in 2002, there was a trailer part that I have no idea where it goes......it's a light, that looks as though it would fit over the license plate witha long wire and then a single light? Where exactly is this used?

I am under the impression that it is required by law to be placed on the stowed mast, the highest and most aft item on the towed "package" while one is trailering at night. Much like during daylight hours, one is supposed to fly a red flag from the aftmost end.
I spiced in a two pin connector at the tail lights and put a mating connector on the long wire from the light. There is a convienient stud already located at the top of the mast to fasten this running/marker light to.
I could be wrong, because I frequently am, but all of the pieces of the puzzle fell in line perfectly for me. At least on a M.

Well.........there you go. I figured it had to be for that...might come in handy next July on the way to the Abacos

Since Hardcrab is from California he is correct in his assumption. It is the law in CA that the light be attached to the end of the mast when trailering. I however being from Virginia do not have the same law on the books and do not need to use it unless I choose to (For added Safety I do use it). If you do not routinely use it you should check with each state you will trailer for their requirements.

Is it correct to assume the longer light is attached to the license plate and the small single to the mast? I just got my 26M and was wondering the same? Thank you

I was wondering the same because the license plate part dosn't appear to fit on the trailer because of the guide post and the longer wire doesn't seem to stretch to the end of the supported mast.

I never saw such a light on my trailer.
Now I'm wondering if (A) The factory picks and chooses when to have this i.e. by the state it is going to. (B) It was removed by the dealer before delivery (C) Since I never knew about it, I never looked for it. I now have to go look!

my 2002 X didn't come with such an animal.
i actually rigged one myself for the back end of the tilted motor as a safety precaution on long trips.
during daylite hours, to and from the local (20 miles) launching ramp, i have decided that it's not necessary.
