Has anyone found a way to silence the noise that comes from the dagger board while at anchor? In our boat, (and I’m sure all others) as the swell passes by, the dagger board knocks against the inside of the boat making it tough to tune out and sleep. If I pull up the dagger board, the boat rocks more so I keep it down to stabilize the boat a bit. Any suggestions?

Is your ballast full?

I honestly don't recall ever hearing that. I have a 2005 M.

Now just in case my oldshimer is affecting me, I asked the admiral; she does not recall it either. It has been five months, but neither of us remembers hearing that. I do keep the ballast full at anchor.

Same thing here 05 Mac. If you figure a quick easy way to stop the banging let me know. Seems common on many trailer Sail boats from what I read and hear . Its not as bad raised up 1/2 way with both rudders down & wheel bungeed off.

I've been planning on reinforcing the hole to central pivot of the centerboard (I have a 26X--no daggerboard here, but the swinging keel does make some noises at times) but I worry about making it too rigid and hard to swing in position.
I sorta imagine two people could walk a line from the bow, on either side, underneath the boat and use it to wedge the keel in a firmer position--in extremis, have one walk all around, and have the daggerboard pressed to one side. In the morning, you could just pull one end of the line and you're ready to go...
I never tried it though, being too intent on keeping the halyards from flopping against the mast at night--until I discovered what several bungee chords could do

When I had my damaged centerboard out to repair it because I had to wait 8 months for a new one from the mac factory which I'm installing a wing on this winter when I get around to it . I had a 1/2" pivot hole & a 3/8" pivot bolt and it would bang like crazy at night with the slightest movement .anyway I resined in a bronze bushing 1/2"od x 3/8" id that cured the banging noise but now the board is to hard to raise while sailing & to slow to drop when sailing so when I remove this board to install my new winged board I will resin in a bronze bushing to it also only the id will maybe 7/16" & try that it will give it more movement but hopefuly not enough to let it bang around . I plan on cutting off the bottom half of the old board & replacing it with maybe bronze with a wing to but I'll wait & see how the new board works out first

For a while I had a piece of inner tube over the end of mine. I had to stretch i pretty tight and it only lasted a season. It was the biggest inner tube I could buy without the price going way up.

COuld it be as simple as gluing some foam rubber on the sides of the trunk to lessen the noise of the board? Worth a try if the boat is on the trailer..

Ballast now that would be ok but you & your boat might become to enlightened on a long cruise but very happy in a storm or would that be fool hardy & stupified with an empty ballast I think me legs are turning into blubber or is that rubber & now with all that ballast sitting in the cockpit "she's" the boat is a alittle bit on the tipsy side and not following my commands need more ballast . who said I'm a drunken sailor its for medicinal purposes only cures that headache

Geez, how did my employer leak out, it just says Provincial Gov't under my profile! The scotch sounds like something you hide in a closet and drink by yourself and not share with anyone to me. Haven't seen it here yet but then I work in administration - desk job, push paper around.
The foil you speak of sounds like a set of those wings I put on the anti-cavitation plate of my dinghy engine to keep the bow down. I don't know how a wing sticking out perpendicular to a centerboard can fit up into the centerboard cavity but it could lift flush to the hull on the end of a daggerboard. I guess it is something you bolt on once the daggerboard clears the last bunk at launch time then remove upon retrieval. I was thinking a narrow bulb could squeeze through the little space at the very V of the bunks as there seems to be a good size hollow there when I wax the hull, I can get my whole hand between the hull and V bunk. Perhaps one could cut a few inches off the bunk ends where the V meets and create a larger cavity for a bulb to pass through. I might have the wrong idea in my head for the foil and therefore a different picture than you mean. Is there a link you can provide that shows a picture? I am sure I have the wrong idea of the foil.

Well I'm a bowmore fan myself but for the last couple of years I've grown quite fond of AUCHENTOSHAN - 21 Year Old. It's a little on the pricier side (about $140.00 CDN) but worth every penny. Glengarrioch is very good as well but not as tasty as the 'toshan. garrioch is sweet at first, then heats up at the end. 'Toshan on the other hand is quite peaty all the way thru but you have to make sure to use ONE and only one ice cube at the most to cool it off. Bowmore 21 is nice and peaty and has a nice smoky taste throughout. All in all..... they are all very good. Highlander, if you're ever out west.... give me a shout, you can sample the collection.

If I ever have the problem, I think vertical strips of high density foam placed in the trunk might do the job. I imagine they would only have to be about three inches long.
