gas tank location

I have a 1990 26S. I am wondering where people have their gas tank located while motoring? It looks like you have to modify the boat for the fuel line hose in order to keep the tank in the large storage area just to the left (looking to the rear of the boat) of the outboard mounting area.

Some folks have made a bracket that allowed the tank to sit on a shelf aft of the transom, so no spills or fumes were in the cockpit, and the gas line went directly to the motor in a short hose. Putting it inside a closed storage area is not a smart idea. Way too dangerous.

So here's what I did: My 26S has passive ventilation installed, one scoop facing forward to a hose 2/3 of the way down, and one scoop facing rearward with hose to bottom. Legal and legit, just like Coast Guard recommends.
I still have fumes when the laz would heat up if we were sitting still.
So, I installed vent hoses from each tank using fuel connecitons that connected to a vent on the transom.
If you'd like send me an e-mail off line and I'll send you some photos.

My tank just sits on the floor at the rear, in the way I might add. I wish I could talk to the person that designed this 1990 Macgregor 26. The previous owner moved the 9.9hp Mercury four stroke to the oposit side of the transom and put a swim platform where the motor well is. Reaching way out over the back to turn the motor and operate the motor controls is insane. There is no easy way to run the motor. I would really like to know why they chose to do this. I may relocate it next season as it's now in the water in a marina. Any thoughts, anyone?

Suggest unless you have a fully enclosed ventilated compartment for fuel tank, don't store tank inside. An explosion at sea can ruin your day. Have seen it. Not pretty. As mentioned I just place mine in the cockpit sole in a bus tub that I bought from restaurant supply house.

P.O.'s do some weird stuff which doesn't lend to practical use. Motor on opposite side would be on of those things.

In my 26S, the original owner had put a 5-gallon tank on top of a storage bin in the lazarette. I moved down to a 3-gallon - more than ample for my evening and weekend outings - and built a rack to set it on to make it easily accessible. Also mounted ventilation scoops from Blue Water Yachts to disperse fumes, and sealed off the lazarette from the cockpit.
Not visible in this photo are legs that extend to the bottom for support.

Actually, that's one of the really great things about our forum... despite many crashes and a major hand-over in the past 25 years, we've managed to preserve all the past posts and mods, which are chock-full of knowledge, tips and insights from many who have either sold their Macs or (sadly) passed on. It's not slow moving at all - instead it's content-rich.

Right you are, I sit corrected and I too appreciate the years of knowledge this site has retained and the contributions of its members.
Perhaps this forum is just more leisurely than some like Sailing Anarchy perhaps.
A lot more friendly that's for sure.
And after all, I must bow to anyone that wears such a hat as yours....

That amazing storage space on 26S is called โlazaretteโ. We added a gas tank, passive and power venting. Worked perfect.
A tale from our marine dealer- when working down in the lazarette, never let the lid quickly slam closed. They had an employee latch trapped in the lazarette for about an hour. ( the padlock hasp had flipped over the security ring) He was rescued when they wondered were the lazy lump was! True story!
