Ah yes, those are actually "swamp coolers" and not A/C. You can make one for even less, simply blow a fan across a block of ice. They don't really cool much and really don't dehumidify. Find an old Krusin Kool and you'll shiver in that M.

Here's one like we have:

CrusinCool on ebay and its and not getting many hits and I have family down there he says he will ship too sooo
How good do they really work? I will do a quick look around for other self-contained units....$$$$$
As for the Wal-mart window unit thing?????? Better than nothing. But it really does take a Lot of work and ability to make it look nice enough that you shouldn't. . . . . .be ashamed to say its yours and you built it. . . . .
To start you need wireless remote or you need to mount it in the companionway

While we are on this thread we have hashed to death the concept of using cold water from the lake/bay/ocean and cooling with that.
The thermodynamically inclined (myself included) did the back of the envelope which says it doesnt work, some people slung some mud and insisted it could work
To date no one has demonstrated this that I know of.

Got mine on Ebay for $225. They stopped making these a few years back, but the components inside are standard off the shelf marine A/C parts. The first time we used it, we woke about 3 AM and could see our breath. Works great and is amazingly quiet. Easy to setup once you figure out the best way to route the hoses to the cooling water (water heat exchanger rather than air on the window units). We keep it stored under the table when not in use. These come through about once a month. This was the 3rd one I bid on. The one I posted above is not getting much action and probably will sell cheap.
Only problem I've had is with the venturi valve that takes care of the condensate. The port for the condensate line broke in transit, but was easily fixed with a bit of 2000 lb. strength epoxy. Found out that it's actually a $8 aerator valve from a hydroponic company.

Bought mine from Sears, and essentially the same a/c, 5200 btu, etc. Cools our Mac-X on low cool, burrrrfectly. Quiet operation too--nice, and priced right.
Another plus for this unit is that its so light, easily moved around, handled, and stored.

Worst case scenario we too could use a window AC but I would rather not.
I personally don't like the looks of it in the Companionway.
Though appearances can be improved it also makes getting in and out a pain. I need to take apart a small window AC unit and see what it would take to make it properly fit and work in the forward hatch. Then what would it take to assemble an efficient and aesthetically appealing hood.
I was at my brothers a couple weeks ago. We were walking around his new home and I asked. What's that? I was pointing to a box on the outside wall that had copper lines running to his A/C unit. He said it connected his A/C to his domestic hot water tank .
Said it supplied free hot water when ever the A/C was in use and actually made the A/C more efficient.
Believe You Me the disscussion was much longer than that!
This is as I recall totally the opposite of what was argued here . Dons gone for a few days but I will be in contact with him soon about this. BTW Temp of the compressed GAS and the coolant are relative
Not the ambient
air temp and the coolant.

I have two of those boxes at my house in Central Florida because I have two central A.C. units and two hot water heaters. I specified them to my builder when I built my house about 16 years ago. At that time they only cost about $100.00 per unit. Just as your brother said, I get free hot water for the entire summer season which is quite long down here. I just turn the circuit breakers for the hot water heaters off for the entire summer. It also makes the A.C. units more efficient because they can dump the heat more rapidly which also saves more dollars. It puzzles me that so few of my neighbors seem to have them.

Bransher that is what he has alright.
Free Hot water 8 months a year and a savings of 10 to 20% on the cost of his A/C not a bad investment.

The small home window units work very well and are very cheap. The only downside is esthetics if that is worth an extra 900$ for a marine one. Personally, I like quick, cheapand functional since it is only to make my wife happy at dockside. Mine costs about 100$ and is very light and small. Takes about 5 minutes to install and bungee in place to the traveler track. To fill the space above it, I hang a towel hooked to the sliding hatch with strong spring clamps. Makes it easy to open the hatch and get in and out quickly. Stores easily under the table. Also, no repairs ever needed since it is disposable and expendable. Best 100$ spent to make wife happy and enjoy sleeping on boat.

Here is our cheap Haier AC unit (paid $65) in the new Billy 26X AC mod. We also use our new bench/service bar a lot.
Climbing in and out of the boat is a non issue (now like a 26M).
It does not get better than this. So far every Mac owner that has personally experienced this mod has purchased one (ask ROAD Solider).
