What is the maximum amount of gas that can be carried on a 26X using portable gas tanks? What are the tanks are best fit?
I did a search on this topic and couldn't find a related thread.

I use two 6 gallon Duratanks in the starboard side fuel locker. The tanks fit side by side perfectly, though I did have to grind a small notch at the top of the locker opening to be able to get them in there. I chose 6 gallon tanks because they are much easier to carry on and off the boat than a single big 12 gallon tank. I also have a 7.5 gallon Tempo (the strangely named "GAS9" tank) that I only bring along when I know I'll need extra fuel, giving me a total of almost 20 gallons. I can either put this one in the port side fuel locker, or on the "back porch" under the cockpit seat.
So, I suppose if I REALLY needed the max. amount of fuel (which is your question), I could go with two Duratanks on the port side, two on the starboard side, and the Tempo back by the motor, for a total of almost 32 gallons.

I have two 12 gallon Tempo's. As mentioned, a notch needs to be cut out at the top to allow the cap to slid in easier and the rim of the box must be enlarged. I also carry a 6 gallon under the seat. I bring this much gas on any outing as I like to power over sail. The two six's sounds like the way to go but you will be switching gas lines a lot more and checking the tanks more to see if the gages are correct. Do the six gallon tank have gages?

Tempo has just come out with a lower cap for their tanks which will fit either the 9gas or the 12 gal. Should make stowage much easier.

I did a web search for this tank and couldn't find it. I wonder where I could buy a pair?

I run one 12 gallon tank starboard and a 6 gallon port. THe 12 gallon tank fit in my 2002X without modification
I keep the fill cap inboard which makes it easy to fill without moving the tank at all!
I had bought deck plates ($10) and was preparing to drill a big hole in my cockpit seat when I thought of this.
I use a right angle brass fitting to turn the fuel fitting 90 degrees, which makes it easier to connect the line.

We just got back from Baja from San Carlos and carried two 9s stock,
two 6s under the seat and a 2.5 in between them. Easy to taxi into town,
to refuel. Sailed most of the way this trip as favorable winds happened...

I have four 6-gal OMC DuraTanks on "Offline". Give me a total of 24-gals, all stored in the under-seat lazarette.
