Sounds like design fault to me then.
Failure of the axis and/or lifting cable should NOT result in loosing the whole keel, but should result in the keel being permanently in a low position.

I've seen a number of such designs where the failure mode is board all down.

Clearly needs to be inspected regularly then.
Eric
I agree that if only the cable breaks you will be okay, as one should be able to use a line run underneath the boat athwartships from the bow and slowly drag it back, as if you were keel-hauling someone, until it catches the swing keel then use the line to pull the swing keel up into the trunk. The winches would be needed to help but it should be doable.

I was thinking more alone the lines of a keel pivot bolt failure, which would cause the keel to drop away. I doubt very much the keel cable would arrest the sinking of the keel once the bolt fails.

Bea,
I have just completed an 8 month restoration on my boat from damage sustained in a trailering accident. We may have the same boat. I know her pretty well stem to stern now. I am is the process of replacing the keel pivot bolt this week, then she will be back in the water for the first time since Katrina in Louisiana :D .
