The "anti"-X,M trailerable???

Post by ronacarme »

Small Boat Journal May 1984 did a long report on something called a Fast 40. Also, saw a 1980 Fast 40 for sale recently on yachtworld.com for $20K and specs for a Fast 40 on sailboathardware.com.
Similar to our X and M boats, Fast 40 has 8 ft beam, weight 4100#, a drop keel (so it appears to be trailerable), aux power on the one for sale is an outboard, and speeds up to about 20 mph reported (see below).
So much for similarities. Now the differences.
Typical OB = 5 hp.
Sitting headroom and minimal furniture in cabin.
Ballast 2000#, about 1/2 the displacement, and largely in a bulb at the bottom of the dropkeel.
Draft 2 1/2 ft keel up, 7 1/2 ft keel down (CG is 2 ft below waterline).
Working sail (M + J) area 440 sq ft
L/B ratio 5/1, LOA 40 ft.
D/L ratio 42 ( ULDBs usually<100)).
Steve Callahan in that 1984 SBJ article describes returning from the Bermuda race...... off the wind..." in heavy air with a reefed main and a blade jib, the speedo rarely dropped below ten knots all night long. One wave lifted her and flung her forward. The speedo climbed- fifteen knots, a normal burst- sixteen, getting there- seventeen and one half knots! Under easy control, she knifed into the night".....
Wow! And that's a quarter century ago!
Oh well, I still love my 2001 X, waiting quietly out there in the snow.
As you can see, its been a long winter up here in Michigan and some of us are getting a little stir crazy.

Triple ditto for those of us stuck on one continent while our boat is on a different continent...or am I the only one :P

I have read so many sailing books, magazines and websites that my head is about to explode with sailing info.

Oh yes I can relate. Try being on the right coast with your boat all alone on the left!
