Sounds to me like anything other than a motor sailor is out of the question for you, regardless of how much room it has inside. However, if you are not married to the idea of having a 50+ horse iron genney, some things about the 26S that IMHO are better are: better sailing ability, less freeboard, cheaper (though the price you cited seems too high to me, there are many other 26Cs out there in the $6-10k range), tiller (wheel steering on anything less than 30 feet is nuts to my mind) that leaves the cockpit wide open when done sailing rather than having a wheel in the way, you will not need a lot of headroom since the vast majority of time will be spent in the cockpit. Like I said, though, if you have to have the big iron genny, don't even consider a classic.

I buy 2nd hand Macs in the USA and ship them out to Australia.
Actually there are 2 of us involved......me this end and a Broker in the US.
He is continually sourcing MacGregor stock, inspecting and reporting on it, arranging movement etc.
To slip a Canadian into the system is very simple.
The price you quoted for a 2001 is too far out for the USA...way way out.
You will probably get a good 2003-04 M for around that sort of money.
If you are interested, then PM me and I will put you on to Vic.
Cheers

Two comments.
Get EFI. Heed Kelly's comment, re: EFI engines. I'd recommend any efi outboard over the Honda. Short story from a Honda owner: AOBAH. Any Outboard But A Honda.
S Model. Johnnyonthespots' right This boat sails like crazy, It'll sail away from an X or M on about any point of sail. If you like to sail don't dismiss it. Less freeboard, easier to rig & launch, cheaper outboard (Are ya really gonna go 15 mph that often?) $3K outboard -vs- $8K outboard...
I ended up with an S but prolly coulda got an S.
G'luck regardless!

Price on X
I got my '98 X on Ebay after looking for a year at any X that I could.
It was kept in an aircraft hangar in Tuscon so it was in mint cond with maybe 50 hrs on a 50 hp Yammy.
I had to drive from So cal to get it, but for 15500 I got a great deal by waiting and not jumping in to a quick deal.
John.

There might be enough activity to get some decent data from one of the NADA manuals, enufsed.
One of the reasons Macs hold their resale so well is that if the seller doesnt like the price offers, there arent any pressures to sell like slip or storage fees...so they can sit on the boat on the flat part of the appreciation curve and not lose money. The exporters have definitely pushed pricing up in North America, so its a global economy now!! Thats helping the new boat business but hurting the used market from the buyer side.

import boat from US to Canada
I have been reading this discussion board for a year and decided to buy
All of you just inspire me to become macsailor.
Thank you
So I bought my
1 month ago in US and imported it in to Canada, Ontario.
There are no duties on boat, we are in NAFTA. I had to pay GST & PST on boat.
And GST & PST on trailer. + 200$ registar fee on trailer.
It is neccesary to have 2 (two) separate bill of sales. And 2 ownerships, signed by seller.
One set for boat. Second set for trailer. Boat is not considered as vehicle, so it is easy to import it.
Trailer must be stock, It also has to have DOT stikers on it and VIN. Boat also has to have VIN
At the border i paid gst and pst on boat. Next day i registered it at canada service office. They issued me ontaio boat number, which has to be painted on hull. Decals are in Canadian tire, 9$ per set. So boat was easy to import.
Next was trailer. At the border i paid gst only and filled out vehicle import form.
After that, at home, it is neccesary to go to registar website and apply for registar federal trailer inspection. While you apply you will have to pay 200$ registar fee. After that registar will send you e-mail with registar inspection offices. Just call nearest office and make appointment for inspection.
Inspection must be done in 45 days from border crossing date.
Otherwise penalties will be charged. If trailer past inspection, it can be registered in any ministry of transportation office. They will charge pst on trailer according to bill of sale and will issue plate numbers for 20$.
Importing procedure is almost the same in other provinces.
e-mail me if you have any questions.

Re: import boat from US to Canada
So bottom line - with the strong C. dollar and the importing hassels (or lack of) was it worth buying American? Perspiring minds want to know? (sorry bad humor)AndreiT wrote:...So I bought my1 month ago in US and imported it in to Canada, Ontario.

Thanks for the info about importation.
Feel free to PM me or answer openly here. I'd love to know what you paid for your boat and what options it came with. What is the age of the boat and motor? What nake/model of motor is it? Did you have any testing done on the motor? What electronics and fresh water system, etc. did it come with?
From my browsing, a Cdn $23K boat comes fairly loaded.
Also, how far away did you have to travel to get the boat? What state?
I'd love to know this.

Its those darn motors that keep us in the new boat business (and quick delivery...
Ive been scoping out used boats for a crash boat for our yacht club and people expect 1/2 price on a used 50 HP outboard that has been obviously poorly maintained.
Ive seen:
- empty final drive oil case
- Couldnt get oil filter off so punched screwdriver through it - then assured me oil had been changed
- New plugs, except the 'hard one to get at' being original mercury and looked as old as Noahs toes
- Fuel filter with 1 cm of water in bottom
Look for the used
from the owner who stopped sailing/motoring for some personal reason - and the more mods it has , the more likely it will have been maintained.
And you wont get saddled with that slower blue hull of course
