Stern Rail Cockit Seats, good/Bad, Where to Buy

I have a 2004 26M and have seen some seating modifications where a rail seat is addeed to each of the back corners of the cockpit. The Catilina 25 comes with them standard, but does anyone know of a good source to purchase/install them? I live in Bakersfield, CA and have easy access to Oxnard/ventura/Santa Barbara areas.

Also does anyone have any comments or thoughts about adding these seats to the rail at the back of the cockpit? Positives or negatives. It seems like a nice addition to me to bring some extra space to the cramped 26M cockpit and help keep everyone's feet from being cramed into the reduced leg room of the 26M. It also gives seating with a Great view forward.

Bluewater in Seattle makes them for the M. Here is what they look like. I don't know what they sell for but I'm sure they could send you a kit of parts you could install yourself. Some would say that weight aft at the corners is a bad thing for performance, but we used them when out in the demo boat and didn't see any adverse impact. They are a handy place to sit that get a set of feet out of the cramped cockpit floor.

don't this seats interfere when pulling up the rudders?

I think that is why they have the notch in the front so you can access the cleat. Since on the M the rudders don't swing up completely vertical the seats aren't in the way. Most all the boats they sell have them, so I doubt they cause a problem. The newer ones in the pictures at their web site have a bit more rounded back.

Its probably easier to pull up the rudders from that rail seat since you can get further aft and get more leverage. I usually have to extend my arm at least a foot past the transom to get enough leverage to "break them loose" from their vertical down position.

Dowsar up in Canada makes some pretty nice looking rail seats for the M

The seats on my '04 M that came from Bluewater don't have a 90 deg. bend in the rail, but rather have a gradual circular bend. There is a pulley attached to the metal bar on the bottom of the seat that the line from the rudders runs through, making pulling the rudder very easy. It is a great place to sit on a warm sunny day.

The picture I posted above was of their very first '03 M (Hull #3) and the first seats they had built. It had been perfected by the time you got your boat. The pictures at the online catalog are how they now look.

Just a note if you try to reach Bluewater. Everyone is onboard the ship at the Puyallup fair over the next couple weeks. The office staff will be thin. Ray was the only one on duty this weekend. He and I were going to take the 05 M out for a comparison sail but he got too busy yesterday. I also want to see Rays full enclosure. The pictures on line are of the new M version on his '04 boat.

Why won't these seats work on an "X" ?

I'm sure you could design a similar seat for a X, but the M ones will not work directly. They are designed to attached to the M aft staunchion. The M does not have the aft pulpit like an X. Also the transom design is quite different.
