Replacing helm with UFLEX... what to expect?

Post by mike »

The current rotary helm on our boat seems to have a lot of play in it... roughly 10 - 15 degrees, I think. In addition, I think the shaft might be bent slightly, as I can detect a "wobble" when turning the wheel.

Anyway, I have a UFLEX on order, and will probably be tackling this job this weekend. Are there any gotchas to be ready for? Any extra materials required?

Replacing helm with UFLEX... what to expect?

Post by ferd johns »

I replaced the rotary helm and siezed steering cable on my 1996 X with a UFLEX a couple of years ago and there were no big surprises beyond the expected shimming and redrilling to fit the slightly different helm to the pedestal. Probably different in every case ..... I had to avoid interfering w/the speed/shift controls. The new unit is terrific. Much better engineered and works beautifully so far. See my earlier post, as well as Duane's, on the topic. Good luck. You'll like the change, I think.

Thanks for the info... I received the unit today, and am going to try to get it installed by this weekend.
